A. A. LONG.
DOOR SBOURER. No. 461,705. Patented Oct. 20, 1891.
cm. PNOYO-LIYMBL, WASHINGTON u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AROHIBALD LONG, or STAUNTON, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR or ONE-HALF TO I. s. I-IUuBERT, OF SAME PLACE.
DOOR-SECURER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,705. dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed June 1, 1891. Serial No. 394,635. (No'modeL) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD A. Lone, a citizen of the United States, residing at Staunton, in the county of Augusta and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers; and 1 do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it apro pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and I5 useful improvements in door-securers, and it has for its object to provide a device that may be carried upon the person from place to place, and which can be readily secured in place; and for this purpose it consists in the 0 construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
- Referring to the accompanying drawings,
in which corresponding parts are designated by similar numerals, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device secured in plates. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on linem m of Fig. 2. Fig. 4; is a side view of the securer in an opened position.
The legs 1 are connected at their upper edges by the strap 2 and have their rear ends flared outward at 3, they being adapted to rest against the lock 4. on the outer door and the keeper 5 upon the door-jams, respectively, and by making the legs 1 of this construction they are adapted to be stamped outof a sin- .gle piece of metal. A rod 6 is contained between the said legs, to the front ends of which it is pivoted by the pin 7, which passes through the elongated slot 8 in the front end of the rod,
the rear end of the said rod having a foot 9 formed thereon by bending the end of the bar at right angles to its length, it being thus adapted to be inserted in the keeper when the door is opened and to be held therein by the door when the latter is closed. The front end of the bar projects beyond the front end of the legs and is screw-threaded, as at 10, upon which screws a thumb-nut bearing upon the front ends of the legs.
Such being the construction of my invention, it is evident that the legs 1 may be thrown upward, as shown in Fig. and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and the foot 9 inserted in the keeper,
.the door which is open being then closed,
thus holding the keeper in place. The legs 1 are then thrown down against the lock tand the keeper 3, and the thumb-nut 11 is rotated upon the threads 10, thus forcing the legs against the before-mentioned parts, holding the door securely closed.
Having thus described my invention, what I c aim is- The combination, with a slotted bar having a laterally-projectin g foot upon the rear end and being screw-threaded upon its forward end, of a leg upon each side of the said bar, a bridge connecting the upper sides of the said legs and normally resting upon the said bar, a transverse pin passing through the forward ends of the said legs and through the slot in the bar, and a thumb-nut mounted on the said threaded end of the bar and bearing upon the forward end of thelegs, substantially as described. a
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARGI-IIBALD A. LONG.
