No. 46,114. v Patented Jany v31, 1865.
, UNITED STATES PATENT OrFICE.
.ROBERT S. LAIRD, OF SANDWICH, ILLINOIS.
` IMPROVEMENT IN LANTEFtN-FRAME.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,1l4, dated January 31, 1865.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT S. LAIRD, of Sandwich, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement, in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in .the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying' drawings, making a part of this speciiication, in which- Figure lis an elevation ot' a lantern with my improvement applied to it; Fig. 2, a horizont-al section ot' the same, taken in the line x a'. Fig. 1.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in' the guards ot" the lantern, whereby the iorrner may be adjusted or turned down, so as to expose the globe and render the saine accessible for cleaning, and also admit, in case ot' a globe being broken, of a new one being inrerted in the lantern with facility. To this end I onstruct the guard in two parts, the wires being attachedat their upper and lower ends to sernit-,ircular bars, th e lower ones bein g connected to the base ofthe 1an tern by hin ges or joints, and the upper ends being secured to the top ot' the lantern by catches, all arranged as hereinat'ter shown and described, so that the guards may be readily adjusted to encompass the globe when the lantern is in use, and readily turned down to expose the globe when the latter is to be cleaned or a new one inserted in the lantern.
A represents the wire guards, B the ltase, O the top and D the glass globe, of a lantern. The wire guards A are attached at their lower` ends to semicircular bars E E, which are connected at their centers to the base B by joints or hinges d, and the upper ends of said wire guards are connected at their upper ends to semicircular bars F F, which, when the wire guards are adjusted in position, encompass the top O, and are held in place by 'catches G G, as shown clearly in Fig. l. 1n order to expose the globe D, the catches G are drawn up so as to free the bars F, and the guards A may be turned down, as shown in red in Fig. 1, so as to expose the globe D, and the latter may be cleaned with the greatest facility, and, it broken, readily detached and a new one inserted in'its place. The catches G inay be constructed and arranged in any proper way. Vertical slides b, beveled at one side ot' their lower edges, fitted in cases c, with spiral springs fitted on them, will answer a good purpose. (See Fig. l.)
I clainl as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The wire guards A, attached at their lower ends to semicircular bars E E, which are oon- 'neeted to the base B ot' the lantern by hinges or joints t and attached at their upper ends to semicircular bars F F, which are secured to the top C by catches G G, substantially as and for the purpose specied.
ROBERT S. LAIRD. Witnesses W. L. SMMoNs, ENooH DARNELL.
