UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOS. G. CROSBY, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE H. STRONG AND M. H. CROSBY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RAISING AND LOWERlNG SlGNAL-LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 48,334, dated J nne 20, 1865.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. GRosBY, of Bufi'alo, in Erie 'county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Device for Raising and Lowering Signal-Lampgand I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a pole or the mast of a vessel with two upright rods or slides running up along the sides of the pole or mast and parallel with each other, upon which a frame is made to move upor down by means of a rope and pulley, the frame being so constructed that the lamp may be quickly fastened within it, or easily taken out, when required.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a front view of the mast of a vessel and a similar view of the arrangei the top, as at R R.
. D is a support for the lower ends. They are tightened by means of nuts, as at E F.
J K is the frame which holds the lamp or signal. It is more plainly shown in Fig. 4..
J represents the top of the frame, and K the lower part. It is held together by two rods, S S, which are riveted firmly to the top and bottom pieces, J and K. There are four apertures in the frame, as shown at T, T, T, and T Through these apertures the rods A and B pass when the frame is in place.
M is a rope or cord, which is fastened to the top of the frame and passes over the pulley I. The frame and lamp are raised or lowered by moving or pulling this rope.
I construct the rods A B of iron, as being the cheapest and most suitable material; but brass, copper, wood, rope, or any other material may be used for the same purpose without altering the principle.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The rods or slides A B, or their equivalent, in combination with the rope or cord M, the pulley I, or its equivalent, and the frame J K,
'for holding the lamp, when constructed to 0perate as herein substantially set forth and described.
THOS. G. CROSBY.
