Description

@uiten tnica @anni @ffies WILLIAM F. PHELPS, OF VVINONA, MINNE SOTA.
Letters Patent No. 70,467, dated November 5, 1867.
FRAME FOR SUSPENDING MAPS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. PHnLPs, of Winona, in the county of Winona, and State of Minnesota,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Map-Frames for suspending Maps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the aecompanying'drawings, making part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, Il will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in. making anew and useful adjustable frame for exhibiting maps, cbarts, drawings, paintings, or similar objects of any size required i'or 4.use in schools, lecture-halls, or other rooms. In the drawings- I Figure 1 is a perspective view'.
Figure 2 is a view of the rear, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal vertical section of a portion of the standard Ein eonnect1on vwith adjustable standard D.
In constructing my adjutable frame, -I make a standard, E', of any suitable material, and provided with a basal support, F F, as shown in iig. l. In order to facilitate the removal of the standard from one place to Aanother casters may be used. In one side of the standard E, I make a dove-tailed or other suitable groove, H, and in the rear side of the groove make steps K K, as shown in fig. 3. Into this groove I slide a standard, D, having a spring, I, arranged so as to catch ou to the steps K, and also provided with a handle projecting through the standard D, so as to release the catch when. desired, as shown in fig. 8. The standard D, I also provide with a knob, J, by which to. elevate it, or to lowor it when the catch I is released. To the upper end of the standard D, I frame a horizontal bar, A, of wood or other suitable material, of any desired length, and provide it with a dove-tailed or other suitable groove,.B B, extending its entire length, with a stop in the centre. This groove may be on the front or under side of the horizontal bar when in position. Within the grooves B B, I place sliding arms C C, provided with hooks Gr Gr, as shown in fig. 1. In 'constructing the Ahorizontal bar A, and providing it with sliding arms C -C, having hooks G G, it will be readily seen that instead of'nhaving the bar1A grooved it may be made hollow so as to allow the arms C C to slide in the same, and have slots along which the hooks G G can pass.
My adjustable map'frame may be used with or without the standard E. When used in connection with it, the horizontal bar A can be elevated or lowered at pleasure by means of the knob .land spring I. When used without the standard E, it may be suspended from the ceiling, and elevated or lowered by pulleys and cords. When used, the hooks G G can' be readily adjusted bymoving the arms C C in orout, so as to hold a map, picture, painting, drawing, or any similar object desired to be exhibited.
Having thus described my invention, what'I claim, is-
1. A horizontal bar, having longitudinally sliding arms provided with hooks, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth. y
2. The standard E, having steps K, in connection with the sliding standard D and spring I, when arranged to operate as shown and described. I
3. The adjustable standard E and horizontal bar A, provided with the sliding arms C C, when arranged to operate as described for the purpose set forth.
' Y WILLIAM F. PHELPS.
