WELL-SINKING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming; part of Letters Patent No. 460,500, dated September 29, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR CAMERON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tell-Sinking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to well-sinking or welldrilling machines in which the well -tube is used as a drill-rod and gripped by a clamp arranged to slide upon standards, which rise from a power-driven turn-table.
The objects and advantages of my invention are hereinafter fully set forth, and the features of construction and combination whichI regard as novel hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents in perspective a portion of a wellsinking machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 isa top plan view of the bed upon which the large bevel-gear which serves as a turntableis to be arranged.
In said drawings, A indicates abase-su p port, which may be of any suitable construotion such, for example, as a heavy board or timber.
l3 denotes a heavy metal bed, whereon the large bevel-gear C, adapted to serve as a rotary turn-table, is supported by a set of anti-friction conical rolls E. The bed B rests upon the base-supportAandisprovidedwithacentrallyarranged opening for the well-tube. The bed B is also provided with a centrally-arranged upturned cylindric neck 1'), formed around the upper portion of the said openinginthe neck and adapted to fit within a central opening in the bevel-gear, so as to provide a pivot about which the bevel-gear can rotate and thereby steady the same, it being also observed that by this arrangement the central opening for the well-tube need be but little larger than the diameter of the latter, and hence that I provide for a comparatively large area of bearing-surface for the anti-friction rolls between the neck l) and the marginal portion of the bed without increasing the size of the latter. The bed is provided with a marginallyarranged upturned annular flange If, and has its top face formed with an annular roll-bearing surface 1) which slopes downwardly from the centrally-arranged neck or hollow pivot 17 toward the base of the marginally-arranged upturned flange 19 This sloping roll-bearing surface terminates short of the base of the marginally-arranged flange, so' as to provide an annular space or recess 1) for certain portions of a loose polygonal ring D, which revolves as-tl1e rolls traverse the sloping rollbearing surface on the bed. The conical rolls are provided at their larger ends with journals f, which are rigid with the rolls and fitted to turn in bearings d,with which the polygonal ring is provided at its corners. In order to provide a comparatively light ring and at the same time afford proper bearings for the roll-journals, the ring is increased in thickness vertically at the points where such bearings occur, so that the ring may be said to be provided at intervals with enlarged bearings d for the roll-journals. The annular way (1 provides space for the accommodation of these portions of the ring which afford bearings for the roll-journals, and by such arrangement I can provide a broad sloping rollbearing surface 6 and long conical rolls, which serve to effectively support and steady the turn-table and permit the latter to be easily operated. At the points where the bearings d occur in the ring the latter is provided with fiat vertical inner side portions d, arranged opposite the large outer ends of the conical rolls, or, in other words, the bearings d have flat vertical inner ends opposed to the outer ends ef the rolls, by which arrangement the rolls can set close and squarely up to the ring without binding thereon, as
would be the case if the ring were circular at such points. These inner face portions (1' form, therefore, bearings which are opposed to the outer ends of the rolls and will steady the latter in case of wear on the part of the roll-journals which are loose in the ring. By thus providing the rolls with journals I am enabled to form said journals more readily and perfectly than could well be done by attempting to cast pivots for the rolls upon the ring, and as a matter of course it would be objectionable to first form the pivots and then secure them to the ring, owing to the labor and expense incurred and the liability of the pivots to work loose.
Upon the upturned marginal flange U of the bed I secure a fiat ring-plate F by bolts,
which engage lugs 6 upon the upper edge of said flange. This ring-plate is formed to overhang the annular space or way b and serves both as a guard for excluding dust and dirt and as a means for holding down the to ring should the latter have a tendency to tip or rise. The large bevel-gear C is provided along the under side of its marginal portion with an annular offset 0, which receives the inner edge portion of the ring-plate F, so as to exclude dirt and dust from the rolls. Said bevel-gear has its under side formed to provide a broad inclined bearing-surface, which bears upon the long conical rolls and which inclines upwardly from the central opening in the bevel-gear to the marginal offset 0 therein, in which way the rolls are arranged between the two outwardly-diverging broad bearing-surfaces Z) and The turn-table or bevel-gear has its annular toothed portion 0 upon its top surface and is engaged by a bevel-gear G, arranged upon a rotary shaft, which can be driven in any suitable way.
The turn-table carries a couple of verticallyarranged standards, which rise therefrom at 0 opposite sides of its center at points within the line of bevel-gear teeth. In practice I arrange upon these standards a reciprocating clamp for holding and reciprocating the welltube during the rotation of the turn-table,
which serves to rotate the welltube,and during such operation the well-tube is to be lowered by means of a rope and overhead pulley as the boring of the well progresses.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a clamp arranged to grip the well-tube, but embrace the standards, so that it may slide up and down thereon. Said clamp need not, however, be herein particularly described, since it constitutes the subj ect-1natter of an application filed by llunt and Chapman.
\Vhat. I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, in a well-sinking machine, of the metal bed provided with a centrallyarranged neck 15, formed around and arranged to rise from a central opening in the bed, and an annular broad roll-bearing surface I), sloping downwardly and outwardly from said neck, the bevel-gear or rotary toothed turn- 5 5 table whereon standards for the purpose set forth are supported,provided with a centrallyarranged opening wherein the neck on the bed is fitted, a broad roll-bearing surface c on its under side, which inclines upwardly and outwardly from said neck, and an annular line of bevel-gear teeth formed upon its upper side, a driving-gear engaging the said toothed portion on the upper side of said bevel-gear C, and a set of conical rolls journaled at their outer ends upon a rotary ring and arranged between the said bearing-surfaces b' and 0 respectively, on the top side of the bed and the under side of the bevel gear, whereby the bevel-gear is held upon the bed by a centrally-arranged hollow pivot on the latter, and wide roll-bearing surfaces for long conical rolls provided without unduly enlarging the bed and gear.
2. The combination, in a well-sinking machine, of the centrally-apertured bed 13, provided with an annular inclined roll-bearing surface I), an annular recess b around the lower portion of said inclined roll-bearing surface, and a flange 1), formed around said recess, a rotary polygonal ring I), provided at its corner portions with enlarged journalbearings (Z, which are received within the aunular recess W, a set of conical rolls having their journals arranged in the bearings in said polygonal ring, and a cen trally-apertu red gearhaving an inclined lower bearing-surface arranged to rest upon the conical rolls, sub stantially as set forth.
The combination, in a well-sinking machine, of the bed B, provided with a central opening, a neck I), formed around and arranged to rise from said opening, an annular inclined roll-bearing surface sloping downwardly from said neck, and an annular flange b, a set of conical rolls journaled in a rotary ring and arranged to travel 011 the roll-bearing surface I), a ring plate F on the annular flange b and a centrally-apertured gear fitted to turn about the neck on the bed and having aninclined lower bearing-surface which rests upon the rolls, said gear being provided with an annular offset 0, in which the ring-plate 1 is received, substantially as set forth.

In a well-sinking machine, the combination, with the bed having an annular recess. of a bevel-gear upon said bed, a plurality of rolls located between said bevel-gear and bed, a ring in which said rolls are journaled, located within said annular recess, and a ringplate rigidly secured upon the bed over said ring, so as to confine the latter, substantially as described.
