Description
(No Model.)
0. SANDER.
BOX FOR TOOTH POWDER, &c.
No. 459,379. Patented Sept. .8, 1891.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IHIRD TO FREDERICK C.
SHAW, OF SAME PLACE.
BOX FOR TOOTH-POWDER, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,379, dated September 8, 1891. Application filed June 9, 1891. Serial No. 395,648. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes for Tooth and other Powder, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a box more particularly adapted for tooth or toilet powder, the same having an end or side which may be readily broken down by the handle of the brush as the powder is expended, whereby the brush may be presented fiat to the body of the powder. thus uniformly distributing or applying the powder to the brush or allowing it to have its entire face covered with the powder.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a box embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent vertical sections of the body thereof, showing the operation of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the body of the box, and Bthe lid thereof. In one of the ends or sides of the body is a vertical slot 0, which is covered by a strip D, of paper or other comparatively weak material, that may be readily broken down, torn, or fractured, said strip being secured to the side Walls of the slot 0 and sustained thereon, it being noticed that said strip closes the end of the body occupied by the slot 0, thus retaining the contents of the material thereat.
The operation is as follows: The body is supplied with powder and the brush dipped into the same, as usual, as illustrated in Fig.
2. face of the powderor the level thereof is lowered the handle portion of the brush, which comes above the opening E, is pressed against the strip D and the top of the latter gives way, whereby the brush may be dipped into the powder comparatively parallel with the top of the same, as shown in Fig. 3. instead of obliquely or angularly, which would be the case if the end of the body was rigid or strong material or remained intact. The strip may be furthermore broken down or its integrity destroyed until the brush reaches the actual bottom of the body, when all the powder has been dipped out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as. new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box for tooth or other powder, having a closed end or side partially occupied by material of less strength than that of the box, so as to be broken by the handle of a brush dipped into the box, allowing the entire face of the brush to be covered, substantially as described.
