. STEPHEN MCCARTHY, OF THE UNITED STATES NAVY.
CARTRIDGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,658, dated August 11, 1891.
Application filed January 26,1891. Serial No. 879,135. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN MCCARTHY, a citizen of the United States of America, and of the United States Navy, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and improved cartridge, having reference more especially to cartridges for use in connection with revolvers and multiple shooters; and the object of the invention is to produce cheap, simple, and efficient means for permanently grouping together a series of cartridges.
The invention comprises a plate or disk having a series of cartridges permanently grouped thereby, the shells of said cartridges being formed with said plate or disk from one piece of metal, all substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a rear elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional View thereof. Figs. 3 and 4 are like views of another form of my invention.
In carrying out my invention my object is to provide a series of cartridges permanently grouped together in a circle, so as to be applicable to a revolver, the drum or cylinder of which is designed to be passed through said group.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a circular plate or disk, which is provided With a central hole or opening a, so formed as to fit around and notobstruct the drum or cylinder of a revolver. The plate or diskAis thus formed when the revolver, in connection with which it is used, is provided with an ejector having a ratchet thereon. In some instances the ratchet a: is fixed to or formed with the center of the plate or disk, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the same to be used in revolvers having no ratchets.
In Figsl and 2 I have shown a series of cartridge-shells a projecting from one side of said plate or disk, said shells being either formed integral with said plate or stamped or drawn from the same piece of metal. A cap or primer a is shown located over the inner end of each cartridge-shell, which latter is designed to contain the load-charge, as in an ordinary cartridge. WVhile this is one of my preferred forms of carrying out my invention, I do not restrict myself thereto, since the plate or disk A may be provided with a circular series of holes or apertures, through which separate cartridges may be passed. The cartridges are thus likewise secured in a permanent group.
It will be understood that the cartridges are arranged to conform to the chambers in the revolver, which latter can be specially made for use in connection with my invention, although the latter is applicable to divers known forms of revolver. By thus permanently grouping a series of cartridges a revolver can be quickly loaded therewith, and the cartridges will all fit snugly in their proper places and the shells can all be readily and easily simultaneously ejected from a revolver.
I claim as my invention- 1. The herein-described improvement in cartridges, consisting of the plate or disk having a circular series of holes or openings, a central opening and a ratcheted surface, and a series of cartridges permanently grouped together by said plate or disk and having their primers coincident with said holes or openings, the shells of said cartridges being integrally connected, as set forth.
2. The herein described improved cartridge, consisting of the plate or disk having a central opening and a series of cartridges permanently grouped thereby, the shells of said cartridges being formed with said plate or disk, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN MCCARTHY.
