(No Model.)
J. P. MARVIN.
DYNAMITE SHELL. N0. 314,036; Patented Mar.-17, 1885.
WITNESSES: INVENTOR ATTORNEYS.
Ihvrrnn STATES ArnNr Price I JAMES F. MARVIN, OF FORT APACHE, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
DYNAMITE-SHELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 314,036, dated March 17,1885.
A pplicalion filed October 7, 1884 T aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES F. MARVIN, of Fort Apache, in the county of Apacheand Territory of Arizona, have invented a new and Improved Dynamite Projectile, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The, object of my invention is to overcome and prevent dangerin throwing dynamite projectiles or projectiles loaded with dynamite.
It has been found that in consequence of friction, concussion, and other causes producing shocks when dynamite projectiles are fired from the bore of guns explosion of the dynamite takes place before the projectile leaves the muzzle of the gun, By my invention the projectile is constructed to fit over the gunmuzzle, and the dynamite-charge carried thereby remains outside the gun, so that it is not affected by the shock of explosion.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side view of a gun with the projectile, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section on line 00 a: of Fig. 1.
The gun A, which may be mounted on a carriage of any usual construction, is of the length and diameter of bore required for the size of projectile used, and is cylindrical or of uniform diameter in its barrel portion.
(No model The projectile B consists of two portions-a head, a, of cylindro-conica'l form, with a cavity, 1), in the conical end for receiving the charge of dynamite, and a skirt, 0, of suitablelength, which is attached to the head a, preferably by passing upon the base of the head. The skirt 0 forms a casing that fits easilyonthe barrel of the gun, so that head a covers the muzzle.
When the gun is fired, the airspace be tween the powder in the bore and the base of the projectile becomes charged with the expansive gases until the pressure becomes so great as to force the projectile from its place without jar, friction, or vibration.
To lessen the suction in the hollow case when itleaves the gun, the barrel is fluted, as shown at d; or the case may be perforated.
The cavity or recess for the dynamite may be either open, as shown, or closed.
Having thus described my invention, what i I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I In apparatus for projecting dynamite, the combination, with a piece of ordnance having alongitudinally-fluted barrel, of a hollowheaded shell having a rcarwardly-extending cylindrical tail surrounding said barrel, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
