PANTALOONS HANGER AND STRETCHER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,190, dated August 4, 1891,

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CLARENCE A. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Upland, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pantaloons Hangers and Stretchers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of a hanger and stretcher for pantaloons or trousers formed of a throat and means for closing'the same, whereby the pantaloons inserted in said throat may be gripped or engaged and thus supported in depending position.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a hanger and stretcher embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a partial side elevation and partial vertical section of the same in perspective on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a vertical section on line ac m, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 5represents a section of a form of a hanger and stretcher in horizontal position.

Similar letters of reference indicate o0rresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a block or plate of wood, metal, or other suitable material, in the side of which are slots or throats B, which extend in horizontal direction and produce the arms C, said throats being open at their outer ends so that a proper portion of the legs of a pair of pantaloons may be inserted thereinto.

D designates jaws, each of which is mounted on the upper side of oneof the arms 0 and adapted to move to and from the arm above the same, so as to close and open the throat between said arms, it being noticed that the upper arm is not provided with such jaw, it however forming a throat with the arm just below it.

The operation is as follows: The legs of the pantaloons, near the bottom thereof, are inserted in either of the throats and rested on the jaw thereof, the pantaloons being in inverted condition. When the garment is let go, as its weight is superimposed on the jaw and the edge E of the latter projects toward the bottom of the legs of the pantaloons, said jaw rotates or turns on its axis, so that said edge advances toward the arm above it, thus partly closing the throat in which it plays and pressing the legs of the pantaloons against said arm, the effect of which is the gripping or engagement of said legs, whereby the garment is prevented from slipping from position, and as it remains pendent or suspended the material is enabled to stretch itself and have its bagging or distortion removed. When the garment is to be withdrawn, it is simply slid sidewise from the throat it occupies, thus clearing the jaw and arm and being entirely disengaged therefrom. In the present case I show three throats and jaws, in each or either of which a pair of pantaloons may be entered and thus suspended and stretched; but it is evident that said number may be increased or decreased, as desired.

The block or plate A is shown as made in sections, with each of which an arm is connected, the several sections being joined and secured by glue or other suitable material. Interposed between the sections are dowels F, which serve to brace or stiffen the block and prevent warping thereof. The journals or axes Got the jaws have their bearings in the block A and ears or pieces H on the outer ends of the arms 0.

The block or plate may be provided with one or more eyes, hooks, &c., for hanging the same in any suitable place.

In Fig. 5 the device is in horizontal position, and each arm 0 provided with a jaw D, between which jaws the garment is received and accordingly gripped or held.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A plate with arms projecting laterally therefrom and separated one from another, producing a throat which is open at its outer end, and a jaw which is mounted on one of said arms and adapted to rotate toward and from the other arm, thus closing and opening said throat in the direction of the length thereof, said parts being combined substantially as described.
