ALBERT K. BYE, 0F PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July s, for a Application filed August 24, 1915. Serial No. 47,173.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT K. BYE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and- State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hangers, and has for its object to provide a hanger or holder of simple and efficient construction especially designed for holding trousers, skirts and other wearing apparel.
The invention has for its object to provide a hanger including a relatively stationary supporting member carrying a pair of pivoted jaws or gripping members so arranged as to be automatically actuated by the weight of the article of clothing disposed therebetween to firmly and reliably grip the article and hold it in adjusted position.
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts as will be hereinafter specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the hanger, showing the gripping members in open position.
Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the hanger, illustrating the gripping members in closed position.
Fig. 3 repersents a perspective view of a modified type of the hanger.
Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a further modification, and
Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a still further modified type of the hanger.
Referring to the drawing in detail, wherein similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 indicates an inverted U-shaped supporting frame having the upper or web portion thereof coiled or looped to provide eyes 6 to receive screws or equivalent means for securing the frame 5 upon a suitable support. The lower extremities of the parallel arms of the relatively stationary supporting frame are looped at 7 to plvotally receive one of the. longitudinal members of the gripping element 8. The opposite longitudinal or object-engaging member of the'grlpping element 8 is preferably covered with rubber or other yieldable material and the end members 9 thereof are bent to define the IL-shaped formation clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
The other gripping element 10 is substantially U-shaped in formation and the web or object-engaging portion thereof is covered with rubber or other yieldable material as is the object-engaging portion of the first mentioned gripping element 8. The parallel arms 11 carried by the U-shaped gripping .element 10 are looped at 12 about the parallel arms 5 of the relatively stationary supporting frame 5, and the arms of said frame constitute guides for the arms 11. Intermediate the loops 12 and the web or object-engaging portion 10 the arms 11 are bent to provide L-shaped members 13. Plates 14 of substantially triangular shape are secured in the bight portions of the gripping elements 8 and 10 and pivot pins 15 are extended through the plates whereby the gripping elements 8 and 10 are pivotally secured together.
In use, the gripping elements 8 and 10 are opened or separated to permit of the insertion or removal of an object by lifting the front grippingv member 8. The object to be hung is subsequently inserted between the gripping elements 8 and 10 and the latter released so as to permit them to fall by gravity into positive clamping engagement with the object. It will be obvious that the weight of the object disposed between the gripping elements exerts downward pressure thereon and by the peculiar arrangement of the parts the downward pressure caused by the weight of the object increases the clamping action of the elements. Referring to the modification illustrated in Fig. '3, the numeral 20 indicates a relatively stationary supporting frame of inverted U-shape having loops 21 formed in the web portion thereof adapted to receive screws for securing the frame in position upon a suitable support. The lower extremities of the parallel arms of the U-shaped supporting frame are looped at 22 and pivotally secured to the free ends of a pair of arms 23 formed integral with the forward gripping or clamping element 24:. The arms 23 are of angular formation and are offset at 25 to provide poror object-engaging portion 24. The other gripping element 26 is formed with a pair of apparent that the hangers may be inexpenangular arms 27 having loops 28 formed therein pivotally receiving the offset portions 25 of the arms 23, whereby the clamping members 24 and 26 are pivotally secured together. The end portions 29 of the angular arms or extensions 27 are disposed inwardly of the parallel arms of the inverted U-shaped supporting frame 20 and are looped at 30 at their free ends to slidably receive the parallel arms of said supporting frame.
Referring to the modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4 the free ends of the inverted U-shaped frame 31 are pivotally connected at 32 to the 'ends of the angular extensions or arms 33 of the forward gripping element 34. The intermediate portions of the angular arms 33 are looped, as indi cated at 35, to receive the offset portion 36 of the angular extensions or arms 37 of the rear clamping or gripping element 38. The free ends of the angular arms or extensions 37 are disposed outwardly of the parallel arms of the relatively stationary supporting frame 31 and are looped at 38 about the parallel arms of the frame 31.
Referring to the modification of the invention illustrated in Fig. 5, the numeral 40 indicates the inverted U-shaped supporting frame having the lower free ends thereof pivotally secured in the loops 41 formed in the angular extensions or arms 42 of the forward gripping or clamping element 43. The
From the foregoing it is apparent that I have provided a hanger including a pair of clamping or gripping elements pivotally secured together and so arranged as to firmly grip and reliably hold trousers, skirts and other articles of wearing apparel. It is also sively constructed from wire.
What I claim is:
1. A hanger including a frame, a pair of pivotally connected gripping elements, one of said gripping elements being pivotally connected with said frame and the other gripping element being slidably engaged with said frame, the pivotal connection between one of the gripping elements and said frame bein so arranged as to automatically close the gripping elements as the latter move downwardly by gravity.
2. A hanger including a frame, a pair of pivotally connected gripping elements, one of said elements havm pivotal connection with said frame, the pivotal connection between said gripping element and the frame being so arranged as to automatically close the gripping elements as the latter move downwardly by gravity, and the other elements having a pair of arms provided with looped ends slidably receiving the portions of said frame.
3. A hanger including a frame, a pair of gravity closing gripping elements, means pivotally securing said gripping elements together, one of said gripping elements having pivotal connection with said frame, and the other element being substantially U-shaped to provide arms or extensions having looped ends slidably receiving vertical portions of said frame.
I 4. A hanger including an inverted U- shaped frame, a pair of gravity closing gripping elements, means pivotally securing said gripping elements together, one of said gripping elements being pivotally secured to the lower extremities of said U-shaped frame, and the other element being substantially U- shaped and having looped ends slidably receiving the parallel portions of said inverted U-shaped frame.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
