SHAM BOLSTER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,410, dated July 21, 1891.

Application filed February 3, 1891. Serial No. 380,032. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ORRIN A. HANFORD, of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of lllinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Sham Bolster; and I do hereby declare the followingto bea full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in sham holsters, the object of the saine being to provide an article by the use of which bolsters and pillows may De dispensed with when the hed is not needed for use, and at the same time a substitute n appearance will be furnished by very economical and effective means.

With these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features ot' construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a View in side elevation ot' the sham, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.

A represents a coil-Wire spring adapted to fit within an adjustable cover B. The ends of the cover are partially closed, leaving sm all apertures C, through which pass the double cord D, to one end of which is attached a button E. The string passes through the spring A and out through the opposite end of the cover. The cords D at the free ends are provided with a knotted loop G, by means of which the saine may be lengthened or shortcned, as desired. Button II is attached to this end of the cord for the purpose of holding the bolster in fixed position. \Vhen it is desired to shorten the length of the bolster, the cord is shortened, thereby compressing the spring. In order to lengthen the bolster, the cord is loosened, and the tension of the spring will effect the object.

The apertures O are justlarge enough to permit the cord to slip through, consequently being so small as to prevent the passage of the buttons. Ordinarily the loop of the cord is within the cover, so as to be hidden from sight. When itis desired to adjust the bolster, the cord is drawn through oneof the apertures until the loopis exposed. 'lhelength of the cord is then adjusted, after which it is again shifted, so as to hide the loop within the cover.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

An adjustable sham bolster consisting of a coiled spring, a fabric cover inclosing the same, a looped cord passing axially through the spring and projecting through but not secured to the ends of the cover, and but-tons on the ends of the cord, bearing against the ends of the cover, as specified.
