H.- R. RODEN. WAGON STEP.
No. 455,639. Patented July 7, 1891.
UNITED STATES ATENT anion.
HORACE RAFORD RODEN, OF LIBERTY HILL, LOUISIANA.
WAG O N-STEP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,639, dated July '7, 1891. Application filed April 14, 1891. Serial No. 388,863. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HORACE RAFORD Ro- DEN, of Liberty Hill,in the parish of Bienville and State of Louisiana, have invented cer t-ain new and useful Improvementsin WVagon- Steps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in wagon-steps; and it consists in certain novel features of construction which will be fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a wagon-step which is adapted to be applied to any wagon without the use of nails, screws, or bolts for the purpose of holding it in position on the body of the wagon and'which can be moved along the body of the wagon quickly and readily to any desired point of detached at will, the step being simple in construction and cheap to manufacture.
The accompanying drawing is a perspective View of a step which embodies my invention, the side of the wagon -bed being shown in dotted lines.
The step consists of a vertical portion A, which rests against the outer surface of the sideboard of the wagon, as shown, the upper end of this vertical portion having the L- shaped bend B, which catches over the up per edge of the side-board of the wagon-body and forms a socket therefor. The lower end of this vertical portion A is bent outward, as shown, in the opposite direction from the L- shaped bend, and has secured to this out wardly-bent portion a plate 0, which forms a step. The step is clamped in position by means of a second step D, which is provided text with a vertical opening through which the portion A of the step passes. The inner end of this second step D extends under the bottom of the wagon-body, and is held tightly against it by means of a clamping-screw E, which passes through the thickened central portion of the step D and engages one edge of the portion A. The opposite and outer end of the stepD extends outward sufficiently far to form a second step, as shown.
By means of the above construction I produce a wagon-step which can be secured to wagon-bodies of different depths by adj usting the upper step D, which forms the clamp for bearing against the under side of the wagon-body. In this manner the step is adapted to be secured to any wagon-body and to be moved backward and forward on the body to any desired point by simply loosening the under strap and moving it along and then tightening the step against the under side of the body.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a wagon-step, a vertical portion which rests against the outer side of the wagonbody, having its upper end extending inward and catching over the upper edge of the wagon-body, its lower end extending outward, and a clamp vertically adjustable upon this vertical portion to engage the under side of the wagon-body, combined substantially as described.
2. In a wagon-step, a vertical portion having its upper end bent inward and catching over the upper edge of the Wagon-body, its lower end bent outward, and a clamp which is vertically adjustable upon the said vertical portion, the inner end of the clamp extending under the wagon-body and its outer end extending outward to form an upper or second step, substantially as specified.
3. In a wagon-step, a vertical portion having its upper end extending inward and catching over the upper edge of the wagonbody and its lower end bent outward, a horizontal plate secured to this outwardly-bent end, a clamp having a vertical opening through which the said vertical portion passes, and a screw which passes through the clamp and engages the vertical portion, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HORACE RAFORD RODEN.
