UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE; A
OHRISTOPH HOTZ, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOW-SOCKETS FOR CARRIAGE-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,56 l, dated April 4, 1876; application filed March 2, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
, Be it known that I, GHnIsroPH HOTZ, of
Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain Imcompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical cross-section. Figs. 2 and 3 are the eyes or sockets to hold the bows.
Heretofore, sockets to fasten wagon-hows to the body have consisted of staples driven into the body. These are greatly inconvenient, as they cannot be removed when the bows are taken out, and they mar the appearance of the wagon-body.
The object of my invention is to produce a socket which is readilyremovable when the bows are removed; and it consists in two socketclamps, one at the upper and one at the lower edge of the side board, and held together by a screw-clamping rod and nut, as hereinafter more fully described and set forth.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, A is the side-board of I a wagon, and B is the bottom. On the top of the side-board rests a socket, 0, provided with a hook projection thatjust fits over the upper edge of the side-board and extends slightly downward on the inside, as seen at a. Fastened to the bottom of the wagon-body by a single screw, t, is a socket, D, in which rests the end of the bow, and having an opening, d, for the reception of the end of the beveled portion of the bow. A clamping bolt or rod, having a head, 0, passes through the hole a in socket O, and thence through hole as in socket D, and is tightened up by a nut, 6, so
as to hold 0 and D firmly together. When' thebows are not in use and the sockets are to be removed, it is only necessary to take out the screw 11, take off the nut e, and they will leave the body free of any marks of having been attached thereto.
Having-thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a wagon-body, A B, the combination of the removable sockets G D with the clampingrods E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth;
OHRISTOPH HOTZ.
