COMBINED END-GATE AND SCOOP-BOARD.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, LAWSON \V. BAYLIES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neola, in the county of Pottawattomie and State of- Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined End-Gate and Scoop-Board; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in end-gates for wagon-beds, and has for its object the production of a combination scoopboard and end-gate for the convenience of unloading the contents of such bed. This result l attain by means of the mechanism hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective rear view of my invention, showing the position occupied by the gate when closed. Fig. 2 has the same view showing the position occupied by my improved gate when opened,while Fig. 3 again represents the same view showing the gate suspended on top of the wagon-bed and thereby leaving the end of such bed open.

Referring to the several parts of my invention by letter,A indicates the body of my improved end-gate, which is to be made of any suitable material, of a height equal to a height slightly exceeding that of the wagon-bed, and ot' a width sufficient to enable the attachment of side-boards to be made, allowing such sideboards to snugly inclose the end of the bed, as will be hereinafter shown.

To strengthen the body A, two or more cleats a may be attached near the top and bottom in any preferred way. Tothe sides of A, I attach side-boards G, such side-boards somewhat r'esembling an elongated triangle in shape, having at the bottom a rounded notch near its middle and a rounded point a, such point fitting into the projecting bend of clamp B. Clamp B can be made either in the form of a staple passing through the side of the bed and secured to the other side, or it may be made of a piece of strap-iron so bent near its middle as to project in the form of a staple and having the ends secured by a rivet or bolt for the obvious purpose of supporting the gate when such gate occupies a perpendicular position, as shown in Fig. 1. An additional support is given to the end-gate by means of the projecting end of the bottom of the bed. On each side of the upper part of the bed I provide a bolt to pass through the side otthe bed, having on its outer end a ring I), such ring to be held away from the bed by means of any suitable shoulder or washer, secured on the inner side by remov. blenut in the usual manner. The object of the ring thus arranged is to receive the supporting-rod Z)". This rod is to be secured to the end-gate by being turned through the eye provided in the end of brace Z). The other end of rod 1)" is to be turned so as to form a hook. This rod Z)" is to be of sufficient length to enable the end-gate to assume a position at an angle of from twenty to thirty degrees with the gate when such gate is opened, as shown in Fig.1. Near the lower end of side-boards O, I attach, by means of a bolt or rivet, a spring so bent at its detached end as to readily admit of rod 12 being forced under it, and further bent and shaped so as to readily receive and retain such rod.

My invention is adapted to being attached to the ordinary wagon-bed in common use in lieu of the usual end-gates, held in position by perpendicular cleats on the inside of the end of the bed. To attach my improved end-gate, the rounded point a on the lower ends of sideboards 0 is to be received by the projecting bend of clamp B,whi1e the detached end of rod 1) is to be inserted in the ring I), when the gate may be raised to a perpendicular position, thus forcing the rod 1) through the ring 1) its entire-length, when the hook end of such rod may be brought down and secured under the end of spring 0, as shown in Fig. 1. The end of brace b, to which is attached rod 1)", is to extend beyond the edge of side-board O sufficiently to enter ringb, and it will be observed that such brace is firmly secured in such ring, when the rod 1) is made to assume a perpendicular position and the hook end of same secured under spring 0. The gate will be released and opened by first releasing the end of rod 1) and bringing such rod in a position parallel with the body of the bed,when

the gate may be lowered either the full length of the rod, so as to engage the hook on such rod with ring Z), as shown in Fig. 2, or the gate may be only partly lowered, and then raised entirely out of its support and made to assume the position shown in Fig.

Having described my invention,what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a combination scoop-board and end-gate, the combination, with a Wagon-bed, the body A of sulficient width to slightly exceed the width of the bed, provided with side-boards G, having 011 their lower end a rounded notch near their middle, and a rounded point a, and having a brace b for engaging with rod 1), such rod having at its other end a hook to engage with ring I), clamp 13, for the purpose of securing the rounded point a, and the ringheaded bolt b, all as described.
