WAGON-BED ATTAcHlvlIsNT.l
SPECIFICATION forming perf. of Letters Patent No. 'resale-dated rseptemt-er 8,/1903.
l, Application led October 27, 1902. f Serial No. 129.023. (No model.) l
Be it known thatl, WILLIAM WHITLooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greeley, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented a newand useful Wagon- Bed Attachment, of which the following is a speciiication. j 1
This invention relates to Wagon-bed attachments, and has for itsobject to provide improved means for iirmlyclamping the wagonbed upon the bolsters and to arrange the device for convenient manipulation, so as to facilitate the application and removal of theV wagon-bed.
yIt is furthermore designed' to have the device extensible, so as to engage andV fasten the sideboards when applied to the wagonbed, and, iinally, to have the device complete l j in itself in order that it may be applied to any ordinary form of wagon-bed without changing or altering the same in vany manner whatsoever. l
Vith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafterlmore fully described, shown in the accompanyin g drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details maybe madewithin the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacriicin g any of the advantages .0f the invention. j
In the drawings,I `igure 1 is a perspective view showing the present attachment applied to clamp the wagon-bed and a side-board upon a bolster. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of one side of the wagon-bed, the side-board being omitted and showingthe present attachment in elevation. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail perspective views of the link members of the devicel Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
To adequately illustrate the application and' j Wagonbed-engaging link 5, `formedfrom a rod which is doubled upon itself with its opposite ends formed into outwardly-directed hooks 6, which embrace the lowermost coil of the spring, while the upper end of the link is projected above the spring and formed into a hook 7, which is designed -to embrace the upper edge of the adjacent side ofthe wagonbed. Another link,8,formed by a rod'doubled upon itself, is situated within the spring, with its opposite end portions formed `into-hooks 9, which embrace the' uppermostcoil of the Spring, with the lower looped end of the link projected below the spring. Situated below the spring is a bracket l0, which is secured to either the front or rear face of J[he adjacent standard and is provided at its upper end with a laterally-odset transversely-disposed bearing-knuckle ll, withinwhich a shaftis rotatably mounted, said shaft being-provided at one end with a crank-handle l2 and at its opposite end with a comparatively short crankarm 13, having a terminal lateral crank-pin or projection le, which works withinthe closed end of the looped portion of the link 8, so that by swinging the crank-handle downwardly the link will also be drawn downwardly and a tension thereby placed upon the wagon-bed to clamp the same iirmly upon the bolster.
A very important feature of the present invention resides in the manner of locking the device so as to prevent accidental loosening or disengagement thereof. In this connection it will be noted that the bearing ll is offset from the bracket 10, whereby when the .crank-handle l2 is thrown downwardly and into engagement with the body of the bracket the crank-arm 13, which is substantially parallel with the crank-handle, will have passed the vertical, and therefore the tendencypf the tension 0n the spring is to'draw the crankhandle` against the bracket.` IjIence the device isV locked against accidental disengagement. The crank-handle is provided with a deiiected portion which is" 'arranged to engage the bracket, whereby the end of the crank- IOO handle is offset from the standard to enable it to be readily grasped.
Should it be desired to extend the sides of the Wagon-bed by the employment of sideboards 15, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the hook 7 of thelink 5 is engaged over the upper edge of the side-board, and a connecting-rod 16 has its upper hooked end 17 engaged with the lower closed looped end of the link 8, with its lower hooked end 18 engaged with the crank-pin 14, whereby the device may be extended so as to take in the sideboard as well as the original side of the wagonbed. By the employment of the hooked connecting-rod the device is made extensible without changing or altering the same in any manner whatsoever, whereby the device may be employed in connection with a wagon-bed alone and also with the wagon-bed when the side-boards are fitted thereto. The links 5 and 8 and the coiled spring 4 form a tension or yieldable device for engaging either the top boxor the wagon body or box and the connecting' rod or link 16, which detachably engages the operating device, and the yieldable or tension device permits the attach` ment to be varied in length for arranging the same to accommodate a top box or to engage the upper edge of a wagon body or box.
By the employment of the present device the wagon-bed is held snugly against the bolsters and the standards, and thereby obviates wear incident to the joltin g of the wagon-bed.
1. The combination with a bolster, a standard rising therefrom and a wagon-bed supported upon the bolster, of a spring having its upper end engaged with the bed, and means mounted upon the standard and connected to the spring for placing a tension thereon to clamp the wagon-bed firmly upon the bolster. 2. A wagon-bed attachment, comprising a helical spring, an upstanding link within the spring with its lower end connected to the lower end of the spring and its upper end projected above the spring and terminating ina hook, a second link havingits upper end connected to the upper end of the spring and its lower end projected below the spring, a bracket, and means mounted upon the bracket and connected to the lower end o f the lower link for placing a tension upon the spring.
3. A wagon-bed attachment comprising a helical spring, an upstanding link within the ,spring with its lower end connected to the lower end of the spring and its upper end projected above the spring and terminating in a hook, a second link having its upper end connected to the-upper end of the spring and its lower end projected below the spring, a bracket, a rock-l shaft mounted upon the or top box, and a detachable connection between the operating device and the yieldable device adapted to permit the attachment to be varied in length, substantially as described.
5. A wagon-bed attachment comprising a helical spring, a link connected to the lower end of the spring with its upper end projected above the spring and provided with a terminal hook, a second link connected to the upper end of the spring and having a looped A lower end projected below the spring, a bracket, a rock-shaft mounted thereon, a crank-handle upon the rock-shaft, acrankarm upon the rock -shaft and provided with a lateral pin or projection detachably engaged with the looped end of the lower link, and a connecting-rod having its opposite ends provided with hooks for detachable engagement with the crank-pin or projectionand the looped portion of the lower link, respectively, whereby the device may be extended.
6. A wagon-bed attachment comprising a member having means for connection with a wagon-bed, a bracket, a rock-shaft mounted on the bracket and provided at one end with a crank-arm connected with the said mem.
ber, said rock-shaft being provided at its other end with a crank-handle having a deflected portion arranged to engage the bracket, whereby it is offset from the part to which the bracket is attached, substantially as described.
7 A wagon-bed attachment, comprising a helical spring, links connected to the spring and projected at opposite ends thereof,'one of the links having a terminal hook for engagement with the upper edge of the wagonbed, a bracket having a transverse bearing oiset at the front thereof, a rock-shaft mounted in the bearing, a crank-arm carried by the rock-shaft and connected to the other link, and a crank-handle connected to the rockshaft and bowed laterally across the bracket, a portion of the latter lying in the path of the bowed part of the crank-handle to limit the movement thereof and lock the device in clamped position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing' as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM VHITLOOK.
