Description

C. G. UDELL (No Model.)
TABLE.
Patented June 23,1891.
NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN G. UDELL, OF NORTH INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters :Patent No. 454,508, dated J une 23, 1891.
Application filed April 26 1889.
To all w'wm t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN G. UDELL, of North Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts.
My invention relates to the construction of tables, especially that kind known as round or center tables, and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings, Figure l is a general view of the table. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line n te, Fig. 4. Fig. 3 is an inside rear View of the upper part of one of the feet, showing the flanges and lugs. Fig. 4 is a detail View showing the manner in which the feet are fastened to the standard. Figis an under side view, the standard being in cross section, showing the spider fastened beneath the top. Fig. G is an edge view of the same.
The drawings are none of them upon the same scale, Figs. 2, 3, and 4 being on alarger scale than the others.
In detail, t is the top, to the under side of which is fastened a metal spider composed of two long arms l l and two shorter armsf and 3, the long arms having slots sl, through which screws are passed connecting it to the table, the shorter arms having simply holes. The slots are intended to allow for any draw there may be made, so as not to strain or warp the wood. The longer pieces are preferably strengthened on each side near the center by short ribs elongated into eyes, through which screws are also passed, as shown in Fig. 5. These ribs are all connected tothe center socket 7n, in which is inserted the end of the standard sf. The arm 3, connected to this socket,is provided with a spring-clip cl, formed integral with the socket, through which passes the bolt b, and by tightening the nut upon this bolt lthe socket is clamped about the standard so that it cannotbe withdrawn until the nut is loosened. This affords a ready and easy means of detaching the top from the standard for shipment.
The feet are composed of metal brackets f, whose upper ends are provided with circular Serial No. 308,756. (No model.)
flanges ji, in the center of which are lugs for entering holes or openings o in the standard. Ribs r are formed on one side of thesf` feet, and a lock-ring r, provided with notches n, which encircles the standard, is driven down over these flanges, holding the feet firmly in place; and it will be seen that the shape of the upper end of the footissnch that an opening is left between the flanges 77. and the standard, and this increases in width toward the bottom, so that as the ringr is driven down it clamps the parts more firmly together and locks them in place. rlhe position ofthe ring on the flange is indicated in Fig. 2, and an inside view of the foot, with the flanges and lugs, is shown in Fig. 3. These parts are preferably made of malleable iron, so that they will not break. By striking n pon the ring fr with a hammer until it passes above the end of the rib r', the feet maybe snccessively taken out and removed from the standard, and this enables the parts to be shipped in boxes or packages, so that the whole table may be readily taken apart and pnt together again for sale at the factory or warehouse.
The locking device herein shown may be adapted and used for a variety of purposes besides a table, and a bracket or foot of any kind may be attached to a central standard by means thereof.
IVhat I claim as my invention; and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is the following:
l. The table-foot composed of the bracket f, with flanges fi and lugs connected with such flanges, a rib r', and means, such as a lockring r, for securing the legs to the standard, in combination with such standard, having openings o to receive the lugs lof the flanges, substantially as described.
2. In a table, a support comprising three or more feet or brackets provided with lugs for entering openings in the standard, and having inclined ribs formed in one or more sides of such feet or brackets, alock-ring encircling such standard and provided with notches for engaging with the ribs on such brackets, in combination with a standard having openings to receive lthe lugs of the brackets, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device for locking a foot or bracket to a central standard, comprising aloek-ring en- IOO circling such standard and having recesses In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my for engaging with inclined ribs formed on one hand this 20th day of April, 1889. or more sides of such bracket or foot, in combination with such bracket or foot provided CALVIN G. UDELL. 5 with inclined ribs and lugs for entering openl/Vtnesses:
ings in the standard, substantially as de- O. P. JACOBS,
scribed. E. B. GRIFFITH.
