Description
G. E. MATILE.
Pocket Pipe Cleaner.
Patented Nov. 29; I864.-
Y x MTA/ESSA'J W ZM Fries.
GUSTAVUS E. MATILE, OF \VASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
POCKET PIPE-OLEANER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 15,258, dated November 29, 1864.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GUsrAvUs E. MATILE, of the city of \Vashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Pipe-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the abovenientioncd improvements, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, which are intended to form a part of and be used in connection with this specification, the respective figures of which drawings are described as follows, to wit:
Figure l is a perspective view of the invention, the various parts of the device being turned aside one from the other. Fig. 2 is a view of the same from behind the scraperblade covering the stopper and the picker. Fig. 3 is a view of the same, representing my device from the front side, showing the pickercovering, the stopper, and part of the scraper.
This invention consists in a metallic pocket pipe-cleaner, composed of five piecesviz., a scraper, a stopper, a picker, a spring, and a pivot, the three former revolving on an axis, and being held together by means of the spring.
a represents the spring, which has in this particular case the form of the handle of a key. It terminates at its lower extremity by two plates or jaws, Z), perforated in their center, so as to admit a pivot, 0, around which the scraper, stopper, and picker revolve, their respective heads being likewise provided with a perforated plate, d.
e is a concave scraper, wider at the end nearest the handle than at its other end,whicl1 is slightly curved upward, this scraper being made to clean the inner sides of the pipe from the ashes and calcined tobacco. At the upper end of the scraper proper there is on one or two sides a sharpened edge, h, which the smoker may make use of for various purposes, especially to cut off the mouth end of his cigar.
f is a shaft, the lower end of which is fastened in a disk, this disk being to press the tobacco down the pipe, and to protect against the points of the scraper and picker, and can be used for engraving a seal thereon, the upper head end of said shaft being longitudinally provided with two ridges, corresponding with two grooves cut in the respective heads of both the scraper and the picker.
It is well known that devices of similar kind have been used long since by smokers; but they were not so complete as mine, and they lacked in the spring, which constitutes the essential part of my improvements. Being deprived of such a spring, the various parts of the device will open from themselves, and thus become dangerous.
9 is a picker to remove any obstruction in the stem and pipe, and may be used to introduce into such cigars as do not smoke well for being too tight.
I have given to the spring the form of the handle of a key, that it may either be suspended on a nail, and thus be laid aside,or be fastened to the split-ring of a bunch of keys, and thus become the smokers constant companion.
The way of using my device is as follows: Supposing the smoker desires to make use of the scraper, he will hold with one hand the prieker and the shaft; then with the other revolve the scraper until it falls into and becomes fastened to the shaft, being thus brought into a line with the latter. By this operation the handle or ring is also made to turn 011 its axis in the same direction until it rests on the shaft, forming thus an excellent hold for the hand to actuate the cleaner.
I do not confine myself to the particular mode of a spring, though I believe the one I propose to be the simplest and most convenient.
As I have already mentioned, I do not claim, broadly, to be the firstinventor of a pipe-cleaner; but
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The arrangement of the various parts of a pocket pipe-cleaner in the manner and for the purpose specified, substantially as described.
GUSTAVUS E. MATILE.
