Patented July .1 2; 1864.
N. PETERS, Photo-Ulhngnpimr. Washington, 5.0
UNITED STATES ATENT FFICEQ PHILIP o. ROWE, OF BOSTON, MAsslioiIUs'ETTs.
POCKET TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,526, dated July 12, 1864.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP O. ROWE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Pipe; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to'the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same, taken in the line 00 00, Fig. 3; Fig. 3, a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to anew and improved tobacco-pipe designed to be carried in the pocket while in use or while being smoked.
The invention consists in constructing the bowl of the pipe with double walls, and having the chamber formed by said walls communicating with the tobacco-chamber by means of perforations. The stem of the pipe is aflexible tube, which communicates with the chamber formed by the double walls, and a flexible bent tube is attached to the cover of the bowl, all being arranged as hereinafter set forth, whereby an extremely portable device is obtained, and one which may be used or smoked with far less inconvenience or embarrassment than the ordinary pipes in use.
A represents the bowl of the pipe, which may be of any desired form; but I design to have the bottom rounded and the bowl quite flat or narrow, so that it may be carried in the vest-pocket when desired. This pocket would be the most convenient one to place it in while being smoked. The bowl A is constructed with double walls a a, which form a chamber, 6, the latter communicating with the tobaccochamber a by means of perforations c, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The tobacco-chamber a is, provided with a-lid or cover, B, which may be connected by a hinge, d, to the top of the bowl A, and said lid or cover is provided centrally with a collar, 6, which communicates with'the tobacco-chamber c, and has aflexible tube, 0, fitted on it, which is designed to be sufliciently long to extend out of the pocket in which the bowl is placed when the pipe is in use or while being smoked. The chamber I) has a collar, f, communicatingwith it at one side of the lid or cover B, and this collarhas a flexible stem, D, fitted on it, the outer end of which is provided with a mouth-piece, E. A collar, 9,
also communicates with the chamber a at the opposite side of the lid or cover B, and this collar has a plug, F, fitted in it.
From the above description it will be seen that the bowl A may be placed in the pocket and the pipe smoked, the flexiblestem D being sufliciently long to extend to the mouth of the smoker. The pipe is supplied with air through the flexible tube 0. The chamber b protects the pocket from the heat of the tobacco-chamber c, and it also serves to retain the oil and moisture. This chamber may be cleansed at any time by removing the plug or stopper F and blowing into the collar f.
The bowl may be of cast metal or other suitable material. The flexible tube 0 and stem D may be of india-rubber. I do not, however, confine myself to any particular mate. rial.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A tobacco pipe constructed with double walls to form two chambers, communicating with each other by means of one or more perforations, c c, in combination with a drafttube, 0, a stem, D, and an opening or collar provided with a plug or stopper, F, all arranged substantially as herein set forth.
PHILIP O. ROWE.
