Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. c. BEECKENEIDGE, 0E MERIDEN, CONN., Assienoar'o E. J. HALE, on
. NEW YOEK, n. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN To BAccocARTR| Dees.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5l,255,`dated November 28,1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. C. BRECKENETJGE, of Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in TobaccoCartridges; and I do herebydeclare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, ju which-f Figure l represents a sectional view of a tobacco-cartridge made after my invention, the pipein connection with which it is to be used being lalso shown;..Fig. 2 shows an velevation of the cartridge. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists in a new method of constructing the cartridge, as hereinafter explained. v
. A is the cartridge, composed of a capsule, d, which envelops it on allsides, of a stiff bottom, c, of paper, pasteboard,or other suitable material, and of the tobacco a, which is inclosed within the capsule, as shown. Fig. l also shows a supporting perforated plate, b, of metal or other stiA materiahplaced above the bottom c and beneath the charge of tobacco,
- so as to form a complete diaphragm between them; butthis diaphragm is not essential tothe carryin gout or the success of my invention.
The cartridge is made by forming the bottom o of suitable size as to thickness and diameter,
of round form, and with a small opening, i, in
its center. This bottom is to be inclosed within the capsule, whichis to be then filled with tobacco and inclosed at top, substantially after the manner shown and described in the Letters Patent granted March 31, 1863. to Edward J Mallett, of the city of NewYork, or
in any other suitable manner.
The-cartridge maybe Aof any shape' to suit the fancy or convenience of the maker.v They may be made in any formv of bed which hasl depth'equal to the height of the cartridge.
The capsule should be of such a character as not'to detract from or injure theiiavor of the tobacco or interfere with the combustion in the process of smoking.
The bottoni c ofthe cartridgeis of sufficient strength and consistency to answer as a sup` port for the cartridge while it is being smoked, and it furnishes the means whereby it is se.- cured to a pipe or mouth-piece, J. The pipe J consists of a hollow stem, h, which is connected by a screw or other joint to a chamber, g, into whichit extends a short distance. Its end ois beveled or pointed, so as to be free or clear ofthe sides of the chamber.
The chamber g may be cylindrical in form or of any other shape, and itis to be furnished at its outer end with a cover, f, which may be taken oft from time to time, in order to cleanse the chamber gof nicotine and saliva which will collect/therein; orif its outer end is solid,.t hen 'it should be provided with a bulb or lower chamber beneath for that purpose.
A short tube, e, is fixed in the side of the chamber g,- iu an opening, j, made for that purpose, communicating with its interior. The
tube c projects above the chamber, and it bas a screw-thread cut on it, or its sides are serrated, so as to screw or become fastened into the opening of the bottom c of the cartridge. When the cartridge is fixed upon the tube the upper part or top of the capsule is to be punctured, so that when tire is applied thereto the draft will cause combustion `to begin on the surface of the cartridge; or the top ofthe capsule may be thus punctured when it is made,
The cartridgeis' to be sustained wholly by means of its connectionwith the tube of the chamber g, without anyxother support, and the bottom c is therefore to be of sufficient strength for this purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 'as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A ltobaccocartridge constructed .substantially as above described..
