Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention in toys has for its obj ect the provision of simple and inexpensive devices, by the use of which, in connection with a sheet of paper or other similar thin material, a report resembling the explosion of a torpedo or fire-arm may be produced; and the invention consists of parts formed and adapted for use, substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be set forth in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, in which illustrations of suitably-formed parts constituting the invention are provided, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the said parts arranged in relation to each other and to an interposed sheet of paper or diaphragm, in readiness to produce the bursting or breakage of the paper and the explosion consequent thereupon when the uppermost of said parts is compressed. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views of said parts separated; and Fig. 4 is a View of such a portion of paper as may be advantageously employed in the operation of the device.

Substantially as shown, I provide, first, a tubular casing A, open from end to end and widened or formed at one end with a ledge a,

for the rest thereon of the paper or other sheet at, and, secondly, an elastic shell or chambered casing B, having the walls thereof quite thin, whereby it may be readily collapsed, its upper end being closed,while its lower end is formed intoquite a broad mouth or orifice and adapted to rest or be closely seated on said ledge of the lower tubular casing, or, rather, in practice, upon the sheet resting 011 said ledge. Then by grasping the said tubular casing by the hand, or otherwise supporting the same without closing its passage 1), and striking sharply on the top of the elastic chambered shell B sufficiently hard to secure the collapse thereof, the air contained in said chambered shell in its exit bursts or rends the said paper sheet or other similar material forming the diaphragm, and produces a report resembling the explosion of a fire-arm or torpedo. As shown, the mouth of the said upper sh ell B is provided with a surrounding lip or bead 02, whereby at the time of the ID1- pact on the said shell to eXpel the air therefrom an unflinching contact and effectual airtight joint may be had to prevent any airescape from said shell except through the paper sheet.

hat I claim as my invention is- Devices for producing audible reports, con sisting of a lower tubular part A, open from end to end and having a widened upper extremity a, to form a seat for a diaphragm to be burst, and a chambered shell of elastic material, separate from part A, having a widened or bead-formed mouth adapted to rest on and closely fit the surface of the diaphragm on said seat, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
