Description

\ (ModeL) A. P. NICHOLS.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.
No. 452,549. Patented May 19, 1891-.
UNlTE D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ABEL P. NICHOLS, OF JORDAN VILLAGE, INDIANA.
FAN ATTACHMENT FOR CHAIRS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,549, dated May 19, 1891.
Application filed October 8, 1890. Serial No. 367,399. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABEL P. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jordan Village, in the county of Owen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fan Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve ments in fan attachments for chairs; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter disclosed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken side elevation of 'my invention as applied for use to a rocker. Fig. 2'is a side view, parts being also removed with the attachment folded under the rocker; and Fig. 8 is a detailed plan view thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, A A refer to opposite bracket arms or bars o a two adapted so as to connect at their inner ends to a front round of chairB and the other two to a rocker, each side of the latter.
The outer ends of the bracket arms or bars are connected together by and pivoted upon a common pivot rod a, and to the upper bracket arms or bars are pivoted by a common rod a, the inner ends of the extensible arms A A connected together at their opposite ends by a pivoted cross bar or rod 1), provided with parallel legs 0 suit-ably braced together and adapted to fold against the upper side of said bracket-arms when the whole are folded back out of use.
I The lower ends of legs 0 are provided with pointed studs or pins d to engage the floor or other surface to retain the legs upright or against accidental displacement or slipping when the attachment is in use.
At the front end of the bracket-armsA are secured foot-rests of and between and to the extensible arms or bars A A is pivoted a treadle-like foot board or rest f, upon either bars A, permitting the ready attachment and detachment of the fan, according as it may be desired to use or not use the fan. It is obvious that as motion is imparted to the chair by the occupant the attachment will vibrate and actuate the fan, as desired.
It will be seen that the entire contrivance or attachment exclusive, however, of the fan can be readily folded compactly and stowed away under the chair when not desired for use.
Having thus fully described. my invention, I claim 1. The fan attachment for rocking-chairs, having its flexibly-jointed bracket connected to the rockers at their forward ends, and adapted, by means of extensible arms supported by means of pivoted legs, to actuate the fan as motion is imparted to the chair, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The fan attachment for rocking-chairs, having the bracket-arms adapted to be removably connected to their frame, and pro- I vided with the extensible bars or arms having the front pivoted legs and the fan, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
The fan attachment for rocking-chairs, having the bracket-arms provided with the extensible arms or bars having the front pivoted legs, and the pivoted foot-board having spring connection with the rod connecting the legs to said extensible arms or bars and the fan, substantially as specified.
i. The fan attachment for rocking-chairs, comprising the bracket arms or bars having their divergent ends adapted to engage the front end of the chair and their converging ends connected together by a common pivotrod, the extensible arms or bars connected to the said pivot-rod and having the pivot rod or bar connecting their forward ends provided with legs, the lower ends of which are provided with pins or studs, the spring-held foot-board pivoted between and to said extensible arms or bars, and the fan having the fringed frame and side bars or rods engaging keepers or staples on said extensible arms and provided with hooks engaging studs upon the latter, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ABEL P. NIOl-IOLS.
Witnesses: J. A. RANDALL, W. S. STALEY.
