SHIPPING AND STORAGE BOX.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,232, dated May 12,1891. Application filed January 26, 1891. Serial No. 379,182. (No model.)

Be it known that we, CHARLES P. MOORE and FRANK M. WOLF, of Ravenswood, in the county of Jackson and State of WVest Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shipping and Storage Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention is in the nature ot' la strong, convenient, and light box for the shipment and storage of such goods as are ordinarily kept upon the shelves of hardware and other stores; and it consists inthe peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts of the box, as Will be hereinafter fully described.

Figure l is a perspective view of the box with the lid raised. Fig. 2 is a vertical lo'ngitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section.

A A are the ends of the box, which are made of wood, and B B B are the two sides and the bottom of the box, which are made of one piece ot' sheet metal, the bottom portion being provided with two or more grooves or corrugations b h. This piece of sheet metal is securely nailed or screwed to the edges of the Wooden end pieces A A', and the front end piece is provided with a suitable handle a or pull-knob for taking it down from the shelf and handling it.

C is the lid of the box. This is also made of sheet metal, with its edges c c bent down to form flanges that lap over the upper edges of the sides of the box. This lid is grooved or corrugated longitudinally at c c', and its edges c c are nailed to the rear end section of wood at cl to forni a simple hinge about which the lid may be raised to give access to theinterior. To the inside of this lid is fastened a label-holder E to receive a card containing the necessary information as to cost, selling price, quality, &c., of the goods.

The combination of wood and metal in this box makes a light, strong, and convenient receptacle for shipping and retailing goods, that will not warp, twist, or split, the Wooden end pieces permitting of the attachment of cards to the outside to indicate contents of the box. The corrugations in the top and bottom of the box not only serve to stiften and strengthen the saine, but they also act as runners or guides in sliding the boxes in and out when upon the shelves.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new is* The combination of the wooden end secnails passing through the flanges into thel wooden end sections, substantially as shown and described.
