UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
FREDERICK A. TYLER, OF ROME, NEV YORK.
FILE-CABINET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,535, dated May 5, 1891. Application filed September 30. 1890. Serial No. 366,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. TYLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented a new and useful File-Cabinet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of cabinets which are adapted for the reception of tile-cases, said cases when drawn outbeing supported in convenient position for the removal of the papers that may be within the cases; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty to be hereinafterdescribed, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a complete cabinet with some of the file-cases drawn out. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through one of the cells and its case when drawn out, showing the preferred form. Fig. 3 is a hori- Fig. 4 is a horizontal section showing a modification. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of another modification.
The cabinet 1 is provided with any suitable number of shelves 2, divided by vertical partitions 3, forming cells 4. At the sides of the cabinet two-part folding doors (not shown) may be provided, if desired, to protect the boxes or drawers 6 in the cabinet from dust. At each side of the bottom of the case I provide a series of shelves 7, for the reception of legal blanks, &c., the spaces occupied by the shelves being closed by small doors S. Between the two series of shelves 7 is a drawer 9, for the reception of miscellaneous articles.
In the preferred form of my invention, shown in Figs. 2 and 3, 10 represents a strip projecting from the rear edge of the bottom of one of the cells toward the front, said strip receiving a slide 1l,which telescopes thereon, and said slide being pivotally connected at 12 midway of the boxes. Within the boxes I provide followers 13, composed of bailshaped pieces of wire, the lower ends of which are formed into coil-springs 14, secured to the sides of the boxes. The follower 13 serves to retain the papers within the box. When the boxes are pulled out about half-way, they will tip over into vertical position in front of the cabinet, thus being within easy access.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 4, 15 represents sliding strips pivoted at 16 to each side of a box 6, and provided at their inner ends with inturned portions or stops 17. These sliding strips are received by guides 18 at each side of the cells and near the bottom thereof.
In the modified form shown in Fig. 5, 19 is a slotted plate or slide, to which the boxes are pivoted at 20. In the bottom of each cell is a headed stud or pin 21, which is received by the slot 22 of the slide 19, thus guiding the I latte;l in its movements.
In all the forms shown it will be observed that the boxes are pivotally connected with slides that are guided within the cells, said slides being adapted to support the boxes in position when drawn out, as shown in Fig. 1.
The filing boxes or cases may be made square, or of any other desired form, and of iron, wood, paper, or any other suitable material. The boxes are provided with pulls 24.
In connection with my tile-cabinet I prefer to employ the hereinafter-described system of indexing cases tiled away of lawyers. This consists in providing an index-book in which is entered, for instance, say a case of Jones fus. Smith, under J; Jones ns. Smith, ile 10; S. Smith adverse Jones, file l0; giving a double indexing of a single case or pleading.
The boxes are preferably numbered inseries,
as shown in Fig. 1. For merchants, county clerks, offices, or private use, the boxes may be alphabetically or re-alphabetically arranged, or with suitable labeling, such as bills payable or receivable, statements, letters, receipts, contracts, or any other method of designating the contents.
Vhat I claim is- The combination, with the {ile-box, of a slide pivoted thereto, a support for said box, and a strip projecting forwardly, said slide telescoping onto said strip, substantially as set forth.
. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK A. TYLER.
Witnesses:
J. S. TYLER, C. W. PAEMELEE.
