To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY H. DARST, citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Files, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to filing devices and more particularly to a file box or drawer adapted for filing loose sheets or papers such as bills, statements, report sheets, etc.

The object of the invention is to simplify the structure as well as the means and mode of operation of such devices whereby they will not only be cheapened in construction but will be more efficient in use, afford ready access to the contents for convenient examination, removal or replacement of any paper or sheet without disarrangement of the order of the other contents of the file, convenient in arrangement, and unlikely to get out of repair.

A further object of the invention is to pro vide a filing device which may not only be used singly or independent of other like devices, but which may also be employed as a drawer in a desk, filing cabinet or stack. In such event each drawer embodies an individual cover or closure which not only renders the drawer or file device dust proof but it prevents the loss or displacement of papers over the back of the drawer or container within the cabinet or desk as frequently happens with the use of open drawers or containers.

A further object of the invention is to provide a file device or container which when opened will constitute two open sided trays connected one to the other, one of which forms a receiving tray positioned at such. angle that the papers or sheets contained therein will automatically register one with the other.

With the above primary and other incidental objects in view as will more fully appear in the specification the invention consists of the features of construction, the parts and combinations thereof and the mode of operation or their equivalent as hereinafter described and set forth in the claims.

Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a filing cabinet or stack embodying the filing drawers or containers forming the subject matter hereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the filing drawer or container in closed condition. Fig. 3 is aters of reference throughout the several views.

In the drawings 1, is a cabinet or stack adapted to receive a series of file boxes or drawers 2. The boxes or drawers 2 may be supported within the cabinet or housing upon fixed guides but are preferably supported upon the extension guides 3 as commonly employed in filing cabinets. The drawer or container 2 which forms the subect matter hereof, comprises two complementary units of similar shape, side and construction but are arranged in reversed relation one to the other, and preferably though not necessarily hinged or otherwise flexibly connected. The units so connected constitute a body portion and a cover therefor. I

The body portion comprises a base or bottom 4 and a lateral Or end wall 5 .and a rear or back wall 6, thus forming a unit open on its forward and righthand side. Itis to be noted that the lateral or end wall 5 and he rear or back wall 6 extends the full height of the unit through their entire length while any semblance of a wall is entirely absent on the front and right hand sides of the unit.

The cover unit is of similar size and proportion and construction in a similar manner except that the positions of the vertical walls are reversed. The cover comprises a top or main section 7 carrying a front wall 8 and a lateral or end wall 9 at the right hand side of the cover section.

The several walls of the cover and body units being thus oppositely disposed, the forward and lateral walls of the cover section fill the open forward and lateral sides of the body section when the device is closed, the sides of the respective units coact one with the other to form a complete inclosure when the units are closed one upon the other.

F or convenience of use the units are connected preferably though not necessarily by hinges 10. It is obvious that in lieu of the hin es 10, hooks, links or other engaging means may be employed. When in use the file device is opened as shown in Fig. 3 with the free edge of thecover section resting upon the table or support upon which the body also rests. The cover section is thus gag.

inclined downwardly and rearwardly as indicated. The body section is open on its forward and right hand side rendering the contents of the body easily accessible. The lowest sheet or paper may be reached as easily as the first or upmost sheet. As the sheets are removed from the body unit they are placed in reversed position in the top or cover unit. This unit being inclined downwardly and rearwardly the sheets automatically collect in the corner or angle formed by .the side and end walls 8 and 9 which serve as guides and limiting stops for the sheets causing them to register in their piled or collected relation. The top or cover unit is open at the left side and forward side for easy access to the collected or piled sheets therein. To reassemble the sheets in their original order it is only necessary to close the device by turning the cover unit over the body unit or vice versa and the sheets will be found upon reopening the device reassembled in their original order in one pile or collection.

As shown in Fig. 1 the top may be merely raised without being inclined downwardly and rearwardly to permit access to the body portion of the device. In order that the drawers or filing devices may be more readily removed and returned to the cabinet, drawer pulls 11 are provided. A locking device to interengage the cover and body.

It is to be noted that the device comprises two units which may or may not be flexibly connected according to the condition of use, which when closed form a complete box like container the sections or units of which each comprise three complete walls or faces. Each unit comprises a bottom and two complete side walls of full extent, the side walls being oppositely arranged whereby when the units are turned one upon the other, the side walls of each. unit will fill those sides or open spaces from wnich the side walls are missin in the opposite or complementary unit.

From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described, possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportion, detail construction or arrangement of parts, without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.

While in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more or less specific as to certain structural features, it is to be understood that the inwith those of the opposing unit wiereby.

2. A file box consisting of two complementary units of similar size, shape and proportion arranged in reverse relation, each unit comprising a bottom section and two wall sections, each wall section arranged at a substantially right angle to the bottom and to the other wall section, the said wall sections of each unit being adapted to fill the open sides of the complementary unit when closed one upon the other.

A file box comprising a top section, a bottom section, and four vertical wall sections, two of the wall sections being attached to the top section and extending at right angles one to the other and two of the wall sections being attached to the bottom section and extending at right angles one to the other, said angularly arranged wall sections being attached to the top and bottom sections in complementary relation whereby they coact to form a complete inclosure.

4. A file box comprising a cover unit and a body unit upon which the cover unit is supported in inclined position when the box is open, each unit being completely open on one side and one end, said units engaging each other in reversed relation when closed whereby the open side and end. of one unit will. be closed by the closed side and end of the complementary unit.

5. A file box comprising two complementary units flexibly connected one to the other, each unit comprising three wall sections connected one to another and each extending in a plane at a. substantially right angle to the planes of the other two sections.
