GAP FOR BOTTLE STOPPERS.
No. 451,137. Patented Apr. 28, 1891,
NITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
CONRAD SCI-IROEDER, OF MILIVAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
CAPFOR BOTTLE-STOPPERS.,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,137, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed November 12, 1890- Serial No. 371,259- (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CONRAD SCHROEDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of WVisconsimhave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Caps for Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to caps for bottlestoppers; and it consists in certain peculiarities of construction, as hereinafter set forth,
and subsequently claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section through the neck of a bottle closed by my improved device. Fig. 2 is a plan View of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my improved cap detached.
The object of my invention is to enable me to use a shorter and consequently cheaper cork than heretofore, while at the same time the bottle will be as thoroughly closed as with a longer cork, and the said shorter cork be made easier to pull; and to this end I form the cap of thin sheet metal, such as tin-plate, pressed or stamped into the form shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- A represents the neck of a beer or analogous bottle; B, the cork; and C designates my improved cap, which is formed with an upper circular flange c, (which may be somewhat rounded on the under side, if desired, to more closely fit the top of the bottle,) and with a countersunk center or bottom a, the walls I) of which preferably converge from the flange c to the bottom or center a, and said bottom may be strengthened by corrugations d, stamped therein, which may be in the form of a letter or other device, as shown by the letter S in the drawings. After the cork B and cap C have been applied to the bottle the same is wired, as shown at D, to retain these parts in place.
When the bottle and its contents such as beeris steamed, the cork B fits up closely against the under side of the cap C and etfectually prevents the escape of gas from the bottle, while at the same time the cork iskept below the bottle-top.
Having thus described my invention, what- I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a bottle-neck, a short cork whose upper end is below the top of the bottle, a metallic cap fitting over and engaging said bottle-top and havinga countersunk center resting on the top of the cork, and a wire tie securing the cap in place, substantially as set forth. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of .two witnesses.
CONRAD SOHROEDER. Witnesses:
H. G. UNDERWOOD, ARTHUR L. PETICOLAS.
