Description

J. DU SHANE.
I (No Model.)
CURRY 00MB.
No. 450,562. Patented Apr. 14,1891.
qwi/limeooeo gmvamfloz MZW MM NITED TATES JAMES DU SHANE, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
CURRY-COMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,562, dated April 14, 1891.
Application filed January 4, 1890. Renewed October 2, 1890. Serial No. 366,831. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAME's DU SHANE, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curry-Combs; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement in currycombs, and its object is to simplifyand cheapen the construction thereof and to make a comb wherein the teeth will be yielding or flexible, so as to prevent injury to the skin of an animal; and it consists, essentially, in uniting together a series of toothed metallic strips or ribbons in such manner that the size of the comb can be conveniently regulated by varying the number of strips, and in which there is no backing required or desired, and yet sufiicient rigidity is obtained to make the comb useful without impairing its yielding qualities, all of which will be fully understood from the following description and claims.
Referring to the drawings by letters, Figure 1 represents a top view of my improved curry-comb. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is an edge view.
A designates the handle; B, a shank secured thereto, having a laterally curved head I).
C designates aloopformed of a strip or ribbon of metal, preferably steel, and serrated on its edge, as at c. The ends of this strip meet at about the center and one side of loop 0 and rest against the head I), and are connected thereto by rivets D D, as shown. E designates a similar serrated strip having its ends e e bent inwardly, as shown, and these are riveted to the outer portions of loop 0 near the ends thereof, as at d d.
secured successively to strip E and to each other, as shown.
It Will be observed that loop 0 sustains all the others, and that only the ends of the loops or strips are fastened, leaving their central portions free to vibrate in any direction, so that they will be yielding; but along the line of rivets at the curved ends of the strips the parts will be stiffened or braced, so that too great flexion or yielding is prevented.
Obviously by increasing or diminishing the number of strips the size of the comb can be varied.
It will be observed that the loops or strips are curved on concentric arcs of imaginary circles, and the handle lies toward the center of such circles, thus preventing in a great measure tracking of the teeth in lateral movements of the comb.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A curry-comb consisting of a series of bent metal strips serrated on one edge and bent at their ends, the first strip being connected to the handle and the succeeding strip to the first strip and that to the third, and so on, substantially as described.
2. A curry-comb consisting of a handle, a headed shank, a loop connected tosaid shank and formed of a metal strip serrated on its edge, and a series of short strips serrated on their edges and having their ends bent and connected together, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownI affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES DU SHANE.
