MAIL-POUCH.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,309, dated April 14, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, PERRY CROSSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mail-Pouches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in whicha Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mailpouch having a portion broken away to show the application of this invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view of a portion of the lower side and bottom portions of the pouch, showing the manner in which the rubber or yielding hoop is secured to the pouch. Fig. 3 is a detailed vertical section of the lower side portion of the pouch and of the hoop therein and a side plan of one of the supporting-arms of the hoop, showing the manner of the incasement of the hoop and arm. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the rubher or yielding hoop and its attached arms detached from the pouch; and Fig. 5 is a vertical cross-section of the lower portion of the pouch provided with the rubber or yielding hoop and supporting-arms.

This invention relates to certain improvements in an attachment for mail-pouches for holding the pouch-bottom expanded and for supporting its sides to prevent it from collapsing or wrinkling while emptying the contents therefrom; and it consists in providing the pouch with a rubber or yielding hoop secured in its bottom portion adjacent the sides, and of a series of upright supporting-arms connected with the hoop and with the pouch sides.

Referring to the drawings, P represents the pouch, and D the bottom thereof.

B represents the hoop, consisting of rubber or other yielding material arranged in the bottom of the pouch in contact with the sides thereof, and S represents the side-supporting arms, consisting of light steel bars bent to clasp the hoop at their lower ends and rounded to present a smooth cornerless upper-extending end and arranged in contact with the pouch sides.

As a means of attaching the hoop B to the pouch, it is covered with a leather or some suitable strip, as shown at d, which is stitched or otherwise suitably attached to the pouch bottom and sides adjacent to the hoop; and a represent similar strips, but of less width, arranged over the supporting-arms S, and

similarly attached to the pouch sides along each side and at the upper end of the arms, which strips a attach the said arms to the pouch and, further, prevent mail-matter in the pouch from catching under the arms.

The hoop B is of rubber or some yielding material for the purpose of adapting it to be compressed, so that the pouch provided with the attachment may be folded, when empty, so as not to occupy too great space, and be flexible in like manner as one not provided with the attachment; but, however, it is intended that the hoop shall be of suflicient tension to hold the pouch-bottom expanded at all times when not folded.

It has been common in mail-pouches to collapse and wrinkle when emptying mail-matter therefrom, and by so doing sometimes catch and retain certain mail, and in some instances important and valuable mail-matter has thus been retained in the pouch and has thereby caused delay inv delivery and occasionally damaged the person to whom the mail-matter should have been delivered.

By the use of the hoop B and arms S, at- I tached to a pouch, as described, it is obvious that the pouch will be held expanded and the sides free from wrinkles when emptying its contents, and thus permit all its contents to slide out and thus overcome the former disadvantages of the pouch.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:

1. The combination, with a mail-pouch, of the rubberor yielding hoop B, secured in the bottom portion of the pouch, and the upright side-supporting arms S, attached to the hoop and pouch sides, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A mail-pouch provided in its lower side portion adjacent its bottom with a yielding hoop, and with side-supporting arms connected with and extending upwardly from the hoop, and with the hoop and arm coverings, substantially as and for the purpose'speoified.

3. In combination with a mail-pouch, an attachment consisting of a rubber or other. similarly-yielding hoop, and of a series of upi wardly-extending steel arms arranged to clasp the hoop at their lower ends and rounded or otherwise formed to be cornerless at their upper epds, the whole beingadapted to be secured yvifihin the pouch, in the manner sub- 10 stantially as and for the purpose specified.
