Description

0. SOHWEND.
POLICE BATON.
1 10 Model.)
No. 450,258. Patented Apr. 14,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES SCHVEND, OF BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA.
POLICE-BATON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,258, dated April 14, 1891.
Application fil d August 21, 1890. Serial No. 362,638. (No model.)
-;Z"0 ail whom it 72L(t 7/ concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES SGHWEND, a resident of Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Police-Batons; and I do hereby declare the following to be. a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvementin police-batons, the object being to provide an inexpensive and durable device and one which is capable of dealing a stinging blow without liability of abrading the flesh or fracturing the bones of its victim.
With this end in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved baton. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View, and Fig. 3 is a detail view in section.
A represents a rod, preferably of steel or other hard metal and forming the core of the device. On this leather washers 1 1 are placed, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the rod is covered. These washers are held in place on the rod and in close contact with each other by means of metal or other washers at each end. One end 4 of the rod is conveniently given a conical shape, and the washer 2, having a hole therein of corresponding shape, receives this conical end of the rod, and this metal washer, being placed on first, acts as a stop against which the leather washers are held. After the required number of leather Washers has been placed on the rod a ring 5 is screwed or otherwise placed on the end 6 of the rod, and then the end is upset to hold the washers and ring together. The washers are then forced together, and when compressed almost as much as possible the cap 8 is put'on over the end 6 of the rod. This cap is preferably provided with a flange 9, in which two or more notches 10 10 are formed to receive corresponding projections 11 11 on the ring 5. Vhen the cap is pressed on, it is turned so that the recesses come opposite the projections. The cap is then pressed on with sufficient force to compress the washers as much as the thickness of flange 9, after which the cap is turned slightly, and in this manner the parts are held rigidly together.
The leather washers maybe glued or otherwise secured together; or if they are held to gether tight enough it is unnecessary to stick them together. After the parts are assembled the device may be put on a lathe and turned into any desired shape.
Other forms involving slight changes in constructive details may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, and hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set set forth; but,
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A police-baton composed of leather disks or washers, a central rod having an enlarged head, and a cap adapted to engage under the head and be held between the washers and the head by the expansible action of the disks or washers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
