Description
M. WARNE.
Policeman's Mace.
Patented 0a. 20, 1868.
m la Z 7. 8 U D 7 I in I Wain/e66 as ..To all whom it may concern;
handed MAHLON WARNE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA. Letters Patent No. 83,228, dated October 20, 1868.
Be it known that I, MAnLoN Ni-inns, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Mace; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same.
My invention consists of a mace, having a hollow head, of India rubber or other equivalent elastic material, and a rigid stern of metal, so that while the mace may be effective for inflicting temporary disabling blows,
it will not inflict the permanent injuries frcqucntlyiinparted by rigid staves.
My invention further consists in making the stem or handle tubular, and securing the head to a rod arranged to slide in the stem, so that while the mace can be made of suilioicnt length when in use, it can be Figure 3, a longitudinal section.-
A is the handle of the instrument, and consists of a metal tube, at the opposite ends of which are cut screwthreads, a 11, adapted to nuts I) 'b'.
A meta-l rod, B, is arranged to slide within the handle A and through the nntb, but is prevented from being withdrawn by its enlarged end, (I.
8crcw-thrczuls c e are cut on the rod B, one at the end of the szune, ibr the nut f, and the other at or near the middle of the rod, for the nut f.
D is the head of the mace, and consists of India rubber, or other equivalent elastic material, and is confined to the rod between the nuts ff. This head D is made hollow, as illustrated in fig. 2, where ireprescnts a tube such weapons, are made of hard wood, and sometimes of metal, and their use often results in permanent injury to the party struck, when temporary disablenient only is required.
My improved mace is so constructed, that while it can be used with the desired eflect, it will not be liable, owing to the elastic and yielding nature of the material of which the head is composed, to inflict permanent wounds.
By the use of the tubular stem or handle and sliding rod B, the instrument, when in use, is of suificient length, but can be contracted, and easily carriedin the pocket at other times.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- I l. A mace, having a rigid handle or stem of metal, and a hollow head ofIndia-rubbcr, or other elastic matori-a1, filled with shot or its equivalent.
2. The combination of the tubular handle A, sliding rod B, its head D, and enlargement d.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MAHLON. IVA-ENE.
