STEPHEN BAILEY, or ANSONIA, OHIO.
VVHlFFLETREE-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,193, dated March 17, 1891. Application filed November 6, 1890- Serial No. 370,535. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, STEPHEN BAILEY, a cilizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, in the county of Darke and State of ,Ohio, have invented a new and useful Singlotrec- Clip, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to clips and hooks for whiffletrees; and it has for its object to provide a clip having a hook, by means of which attachment may be made with links or rings in a safe and convenient manner.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafterfully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a singletree provided with my improved clip and hook, showing the parts inverted. Fig. 2 is a perspective view on a larger scale showing the clip and hook detached. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the hook in its open position. Fig. at is a detail view showing the parts of the device separated from each other.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
'1 designates the clip, the arms of which 2 2 are connected at their front ends by a plate 3.
i designates the hook, the shank of which is bifurcated,so as to form the checks or side pieces 5 5. The plate 3, at the front end of the clip, is inserted between the side pieces 5 5, which are pivotally connected with the said plate by means of a pin or bolt 6. The greater portion of the edge of the plate 3 is concentric with the pin or bolt 0.
Suitably pivoted between the checks or side pieces 5 5 of the hook is a latch 7, the outer end of which is adapted to engage the end of the hook and the inner end of which is provided with a tooth or projection 8, having a curved inner side, as shown at 9. In the upper part of the plate 3 of the clip is formed a curved recess 10, the upper edge of which is slightly raised, so as to form a tooth or projection 11. At the lower edge of the plate 3 is formed a shoulder 12.
The normal position of the hook a in operation is with its point downward. 'lVhen it is desired to connect the said hook with a ring or link, the hook is raised to the position shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The tooth 8 at the inner end of the latch 7 will then be intercepted by the tooth 11 at the upper edge of the recess 10, causing the tooth 8 to enter the said recess and throwing the latch back between the side pieces or cheeks 5 of the shank of the hook. The latter may then readily be placed in engagement with the ring or link to which the whittletree is to be attached. By lowering the hook the tooth 8 of the latch will pass out of engagement with the recess 10 and the curved inner edge 9 of the latch will bear against the segmental edge of the plate 3, thereby holding the latch securely locked. The shoulder 12 serves as a support to prevent the hook from dropping too low, the tongue or latch 7 abutting against said shoulder when the hook dropsto its full extent, thus bracing the said latch and preventing its being accidentally displaced.
The advantages of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed.
My invention provides an attachment for singletrees, by means of which they may be readily placed in position for operation or transferred from one vehicle to another, as may be required.
The construction of. the device is simple and inexpensive. It may, when desired, be made of malleable iron, and it may be very readily attached to singletrees of ordinary construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United. States- 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of aclip, the arms of which are connected by a segmental plate, a hook having a bifurcated shank mounted pivotally and concentrically upon the said plate, and a latch pivoted between the cheeks or side pieces of the shank of said'hook, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a clip, a segmental plate connecting the arms of said clip and having a curved notch or recess, a hook having a bifurcated shank mounted pivotally upon said segmental plate, and a latch pivoted between the checks or side pieces of said hook and provided at its inner end with a tooth adapted to engage the said curved recess, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a clip having a segmental plate provided with a curved notch or recess, the upper edge of which is raised so as to form a tooth or projection, a hook having a bifurcated shank mounted pivotally upon said segmental plate, a latch pivoted between the cheeks or side pieces of the shank of said hook and having at its inner end a tooth adapted to engage the said curved recess, and a stop or shoulder formed at the lower edge of the segmental plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a clip having a segmental plate provided With a curved recess, a hook havingabifurcated shank mounted pivotal-1y upon said plate, and a latch pivoted between the cheeks or side pieces of the shank of said hook and having a curved inner end normally bearing against the edge of the segmental plate and terminating in a tooth adapted to engage the curved recess in said I plate, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of the clip having the segmental plate provided with-a curved'recess, the upper edge of which is raised to form a tooth or projection, a hook having a bifurcated shank mounted pivotally and concentrically upon said plate, a latch pivoted between the checks or side pieces of the shank of the hook and having a curved inner end normally bearing against the edge of the segmental plate and terminating in a tooth adapted to engage the curved recess of said plate, and a stop or shoulder formed at the lower edge of the latter, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN BAILEY.
