DANIEL H. ERDMAN, OF CAMDEN, NElV JERSEY.
PORTABLE RANGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,109, dated January 20, 1891. Application filed October 11,1890. Serial No. 36?,793. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. ERDMAN, a citizen. of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Portable Ranges, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in the portable range for which Letters Patent No. 4283M) were granted to me May 20, 1890.
My invention consists in the combination, with a portable range, vertical boiler, and drum,of a bottom brace or blow-off pipe.
On reference t the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a vertical and perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical and diametrical section through the drum, mantel, and top of the range, showing the top and bottom bracings of the drum and boiler. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the arrangement of the bottom of the drum, boiler, and pipe-opening and the top of the range with a bottom brace against the pipe-opening. Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical view of a bottom brace and blow-off for the boiler, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of Fig. 4.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
A is a portable range, and B its top provided with a pipe-opening a.
C is a mantel on supports 0.
D is a boiler placed vertically above or over the opening a, and b 0 its flow and return pipes.
E is a drum which inc-loses the boiler D, and (I an intervening ring or draft-space.
F is a pipe from the drum to the chimney. The drum passes through the mantel O, and is thereby top-braced by it against lateral movement. The flow and return pipes 19 0 pass through the head 6 of the drum and brace the boiler at the top also against side pressure.
For draft purposes the bottom of the boiler D is supported above the top B of the range by feet or stands G, and it is braced at the bottom end against lateral movement by a brace H, secured between it and the top of the range, which in this instance is semicircular and flanged to fit around the pipe hole or neck a. Provision can be made for using this brace for the boiler-bottom blow-off by forming an openingf, Figs. 3, 4-, and 5, through it with pipeconnections or by making the said bottom brace of suitable pipe, which can be bolted or otherwise fixed between the bottom of the boiler and the top of the range and attaching to the same a blow-through pipe. By this arrangement the feet or stands G can be dispensed with, if required, for a heavy-enough blow-off pipe or brace will carry the boiler above the top of the range with sufficient rigidity. The spent products of combustion from the portable range A pass through the opening a, and, impinging the bottom of the boiler D, are deflected and circulated around it in the space (1, imparting heat to its contained water, after which they pass out through the pipe F. During the circulation in the draft-space d the evolved soot deposits on the top of the range within the drum, and its removal is accomplished by means of a doorI of the sa d drum. If allowed to accumulate, the soot would check circulation and make the draft sluggish and imperfect. The bottom of the drum making contact with the top of the range, the sootdoor can be placed low enough for all practical purposes.
J are fixed or movable brackets connected with the drum for holding culinary and other utensils. While cooking, the heat of the drum is imparted to the contents for keeping warm until used.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with a portable range, vertical boiler, and drum, of a bottom brace or blow-off pipe, for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL H. ERDMAN.
