CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH ,LAUFER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
RAZOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters iatent No. 443,773, dated December 30, 1890. Application filed October 3,1890. Serial No. 366,967. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH LAUFER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved construction of razors, whereby the concave grinding of the same is dispensed with and the razors can be readily sharpened on the strop; and the invention consists of a razor the blade of which is supported in a holder that is formed of a tang having a tapering extension or head, said tang and head being slitted at the ends for attaching the flat steel blade by means of lugs at the ends of said blade and by solder that is applied to both sides of the tapering head and blade, as will be fully described hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved razor. Fig. 2 is a side View of the tang and its tapering extension or head. Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the tang and head to which the blade proper is applied. Fig. 4 is a side view of the blade used in my razor; and Figs. 5 and 6 are vertical transverse sections, respectively, on the lines and y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the handle, and B the blade, of my improved razor. The blade B is made of two parts-a tang O, which is pivoted to the handle A and provided with a tapering extension or head 0, and a fiat steel blade B. The tang O is provided with a shoulder 12, that is centrally slitted by means of asaw, while the outer end of the tapering extension or head 0 is similarly recessed, as at b so as to provide for the insertion of the lugs b b of the steel blade B, which lugs are made integral with the blade, as shown clearly in Fig. 4. IVhen the blade is inserted into the slitted shoulder 12 of the tang G and the slitted front end of the head 0, it is fastened thereto by passing a rivet d through the shoulder l) of the tang and rear lug b' of the blade B, and applying then to each side of the head Cand blade B a layer of solder e, which extends partly over the blade, as shown in Figs. 1 and 5. The solder imparts a concave shape to the head and the steel blade B without the necessity of grinding the blade concavely.
A razor of this construction can be readily sharpened without requiring to be subjected to the expensive concave grinding of the same, and can be supplied at a much lower price than the razors heretofore in use. In case the blade is worn out by use it can be removed by melting the solder that forms the connection between the blade, tang, and head, detaching the rivet and inserting a new blade, whereby the razor is made serviceable again for a considerable length of time. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A razor-blade composed of a tang having a slitted shoulder and a tapering extension or head slitted at the outer end, and of a steel blade having lugs at the rear and front end, said blade being attached to the shoulder and head and secured to the latter by a layer of solder at each side of thehead and blade, substantially as set forth.
2. A razor-blade composed of a tang having a shoulder and a tapering extension or head, and of a steel blade riveted to said shoulder and attached to the head by a layer of solder applied to each side of the head and blade, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myinvention I have signed my name in presence of. two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN FRIEDRICH LAUFER.
