\VASHINGTON XVHITE, OF NEIV YORK, N Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE TAYLOR COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEV JERSEY.
SUPPORT FOR CASKETS CR OTHER ARTICLES.
Q PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 443,469, dated December 23, 1896. Application tiled July 10, 1890. Serial No. 358,247. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WASHINGTON WHITE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Supports for Caskets and other Articles, of which the following is a'specification.
This invention relates to a folding support or frame that is especially adapted for use as a light and easily-portable support for burialcaskets, and which is composed of a central vertical post, which rests on the floor at its lower end, two rigid leaves firmly secured to said post and radiating from the same in opposite directions, two swivel-leaves pivotally connected to the central post and extending from the same in opposite directions, and two pairs of folding leaves hinged directly to each other and 'to the outer ends of the rigid leaves and swivel-leaves, said post and all of said leaves being of such height as to afiord a convenient support for a burialcasket, all as pointed out in the following specification and claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1. represents a side elevation of my support when drawn out ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan or top view of the same. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the samewhen folded up.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section in the plane an 00, Fig.2. Fig. 5 is a similar section in the plane e11 s- In the drawings, the letter A designates a central post to rest on the floor at its lower end, and which is by preference made round, and which may be made of wood or of any' other suitable material. To this post are rigidly secured two broad leaves B 13, which extend in diametrically-opposite directions. With the post A are also connected two broad leaves 0 G, which swivel on pivots a a, their connection with the post being effected by means of brackets D D, which are secured to the ends of said post by the pivots a a and which are provided with radiating arms, to which the swivel-leaves C C are fastened. (Best seen in Fig. at.) The outer ends of the rigid leaves B B are connected with the outer ends of the swivel-leaves O C by two pairs of broad folding leaves E E F F, which are connected to each other by hinge-joints e and f, respectively, while their connection with the rigid leaves B B is effected by hinge joints e f and with the swivel-leaves O C by hinge-joints 6 f (Best seen in'Fig. 2.)
It will be understood that the post A and the several broad leaves connected therewith are of sufficient height to afford a convenient support for a burial-casket.
\Vhen the support is to be used, it is unfolded to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and it will be easily seen that the same can be adjusted to the length or width of the casket or other article which is to be supported, and when the same is not used it can be readily folded up to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that it can be conveniently transported or stowed away. The several leaves are coextensive in height with the central supporting-post, and therefore when extended or unfolded the leaves coact with the post to solidly sustain the entire structure, while a closed frame is provided that is particularly adapted for burial-caskets, and which can be folded up so that it may be conveniently transported.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A casket-support consisting of a central vertical post A to rest at its lower end on the floor, the leaves B, rigidly secured to and ra=- diating in opposite directions from the central vertical post, two swivel-leaves O, hinged to opposite sides of said central post, and two pairs of folding leaves F, hinged together and respectively hinged to the rigid and swivel leaves B C, said hinged leaves being coextensive in height with the central vertical post and resting on the floor when the support is extended for solidly sustaining the structure, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WASHINGTON WHITE. Witnesses: I
WM. 0. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
