JAMES s. MCCURDY, or NEW YORK, .N. Y., AssIGNon To' G. L. AND
J. B. KELTY AND COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 92,075, dated June 29, 1869,
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Pateneand making pxt of the sama.
To all whom it tmay concern Be it known` that I, JAMES S. MCCUILDY, of the city and State ot' New York,-have invented and made a certain new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the ibllowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part 0f this specification, wherein- Figure 1 is a plan ot the sofa opened out toform'a bedstead .y .i f Figure 2 is an end view of the same opened out as aforesaid; and v Figui-e3 is an end view of the sofa, with the back folded up for use as a sofa or chair.
This inventionrelates to a sofa or chair that is convertible into a bedstead or crib.
The improvement consists in a connection extending from the arms to the lbldinglegs of the hack, so that the operation of opening moves the legs into position to support the back, and the connections from the arms to the legs form guards at the head or foot of the bedstead, or at the sides, as in the case of a crib. I also connect the folding back legs to the 0rnainent or top rail of thel sofa or chair-back, s0 that the saine is brought Ainto position fortbrmiug a side or guard to the bedsteadby the act of unfolding the bedstead.
In the drawinga a. are the legs of the chair or sofa.
b is the bottom ofthe saine, fitted with any suitable stutng, padding, or cushions. o
c c arethe arms, of any desired shape or character.
d is the hack, hinged at c to the sofa-bottom l), and also titted with cushions or padded..
The legs f f are attached to the back d by hinges or pivots at t', and from the legs j', to the. rear angle 0f the arms c, are the connecting-bars or links g, hinged at their ends to the arms and legs respectively,
the links g form a covering to the legs, as seen' in tig.
'3, and they may be of a more or4 less ornamental character. r
When unfolded, the back d is supported by the legsY f, and the parts are all held in the proper' position, even should the back be allowed to dl'op accidentally.
When folded, as in g. 3, the back will be. held up by a catch or hoo'k between the arms and back, orbetween the links and legs f.
The top rail k, or ornamental back of the cha-ir or sofa above the cushions, when connectedwith the back itself, causes the bedstead to occupy more space when unfolded, and does not ordinarily produce any benefit.
I make use of the top rail k, of the sofa, as a side to the bedstead, by connecting the sa'ne to the upperY part of the legsf, so as always to remain in an upright position, as seen in the drawings.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, s i
1. The connections'or links g, extending from the upper parts of the arms c to the legs f, abovey the pivots -i, in combination with the back el and bottom b, so that said links g. form guards, asset forth.
2. The top rail k, attached to the legs j, in combination with the back l and connecting-links g, substantially as set forth.
'In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this 28th day of April, A. D. 1869.vr
i JAMES S. MCCURDY.
Witnesses vGuo. D. WALKER, HAROLD SERRELL.
