SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,931, dated December 16, 1890. Application filed September 15, 1890. Serial No. 365,054. (No model.)

Be it known that I, OLIVER B. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a combination toy; and it consists in a certain construction and arrangement of4 parts producing a humming dart and parachute combined, all ot' which will be hereinafter more fully set forth, and the essential features of the device pointed out particularly in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view of the device as a dart, showing the manner and means of projecting the salne. Fig. 2 is a view of the device as a parachute. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section through the cones that serve as the head of the dart and as a ballast for the parachute, and which produce a humming sound during the night of the device through the air. Fig. 4 is a view of the catapult or sling by means of which the device is thrown. 4

Referring to the letters oi' reference, A indicates the stem of the dart, which is provided with one or more hooks ct near its longitudinal center and with a vane or feather O at its rear end to guide the dart when thrown.

B indicates hollow cones mounted on a small rod e, that passes centrally therethrough, the open ends of the cones B being placed adjacent to each other and at some distance apart, so as to leave an open space tbetween said cones. The rod e, with the cones B attached thereto, is adapted to be inserted in the forward end of the stem A of the dart, forming the head thereof, the sharp end c of the rod e serving as the point of the dart, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

D indicates the rubber or elastic strap of the catapult or sling, and E the handle thereof, to which one end of said strap is secured, as shown at s.

h indicates a link secured in the opposite end of the strap D and adapted to engage the hooks a on the stem of the dart, by means of which the dart is projected.

To throw the dart, the tail or vane C thereof is grasped between the thumb and nger of one hand, the handle E of the sling being held in the other hand, and the link b in the end of the rubber strap D of said sling is engaged with the hook a on the stem of the dart, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, when by an upward pull on the handle E the rubber strap D will be expanded until sufficient tension has been placed thereon. Then by releasing the tail or vane of the dart the contraction'of the strap D will throw the dart with great force. The arrangement of the conesB causes the air to pass between the open ends thereof, making a loud humming sound during the flightof the dart.

To form a parachute, the cones B are removed from the end of the stem A and the parachute top F inserted in said stem in place thereof. The end of the rod e on which the cones are mounted is provided with a hook e', (see Fig. 3,) by means of which the cones may be attached to the vane C, (see Fig. 2,) in which capacity said cones serve as a ballast for the parachute top, as well as to impart a humming sound as the parachute is thrown into the air. After reaching its maximum height and as the device begins to fall, the parachute top F will open, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, causing it to settle slowly to the ground.

IIavingv thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a toy, the combination of the stem having the hook near its longitudinal center and a vane at one end, the hollow cones mounted on a rod with their open ends adjacent to each other, said cones being adapted to be attached to the end of said stem opposite from the vane, and the sling for projecting the device, substantially as specified.
