CLARA B. SIMPSON, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
SAFETY-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,243, dated December 9, 1890.
Application filed May 28, 1889. Serial No. 312,440. (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARA B. SIMPSON, of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin, State of Minnesota, have invented certain Improvements in Safety-Bands, of which the follow ing is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved catamenial band for holding absorbent napkins or cloths, in which the weight or strain will be carried entirely by the hips of the wearer without any downward strain or pressure upon the abdomen, and in which the cloths will be spread and prevented from fold- 111g.
In the accompanying drawing is represented a perspective view of my improved device.
In the drawing, 2 represents a band which is adapted to fit the waist of the wearer. This band is adapted to be secured in position by means of a button 3 or other suitable fastening. A strip of rubber tubing 5 has its ends secured to the band at the rear thereof, and thus forms a loop '7, which is at the center of the rear portion of the band. The band 2 has secured to it at each side a strap 9, which is provided with a suitable buckle 1 l. The band is preferably provided upon its lower edge with the two angular projections 13, and the straps 9 are secured to these projections and are preferably inclined toward each other. A strap 15 is secured to each of the buckles l1, and a strip of rubber 17, preferably rubber tubing, is secured to the ends of the straps 15.
In using the device the band is buttoned or fastened about the waist of the wearer with the loop 7 behind and the straps 9 at the sides just in front of the hips. The broad or flat portion of the napkin is doubled over the rubber tubing or strip 17. The ends of the napkin are then brought around the loop 7 at the rear of the band and secured bya single fastening. The straps 9 are then adjusted to bring the napkin into the desired position. The elastic rubber strips permit the necessary freedom of movement of the body without discomfort.
The special advantages of this device are the facility with which it may be adjusted, the necessity of using only one fastening, the adj ustability of the front straps and rubber permitting the use, of a doubled napkin, and the removable straps to which the front rubber is seen red permitting this rubber to be removed and washed or renewed whenever nec essary, and also as the straps are attached to the sides of the band they prevent a strain or pressure upon the abdomen, and they also spread the napkin and prevent it from getting out of position.
I claim as my invention In a safetyband, the combination, with the band 2, having the straps 9 secured to its sides, substantially as shown, in front of the hips, and provided with buckles 11, of the straps 15, adjustably connected at one end to the straps .l and having-their other ends connected together by the elastic strips 17, and the elastic strip 5, connected to the rear of the band, wherebythe tendency is to prevent from folding the cloth to be attached to the band, and the pull is direct from the hips and not on the abdomen, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of May, 1889.
CLARA B. SIMPSON.
In presence of- A. 0. PAUL, A. M. GASKILL.
