H. N. GRAY.
ABDOMINAL SUPPORTER.
No. 395,050. Patented Dec. 25, 1888.
V ara D i w.
UNITED STATES l ATENT OFFICE.
HARRIET N. GRAY, OF AIRTIN, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE TO GEORGE E. GRAY, or
ABDOMINAL SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,050, dated December 25, 1888.
' Application filed September 14,1888. Serial No. 285,407. (No model) To (tZZ 1071 0720 it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRIET N. GRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Travis and State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Abdominal Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
abdominal supporter which shall retain its proper position on the person of the wearer and can be worn with ease and comfort, the
abdomen being supported without any undue strain or pressure; and to this end the invention consists of the improved supporter hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are front and rear views, respectively,
of my improved abdominal supporter.
A is a waist-belt buttoned in front and made with the broad back piece, A, coverii'ig' what is called the small of the back. Suspended from the waist-belt in front by the elastic 3o straps or tapes (1 there are two abdominal pads, B. These pads are scttorshaped, with the apex of the sector at the side and the curved edges adjacent in front. They are connected in front by straps and a buckle, b, and
3 5 are stiffened with whalebones let in vertically between the two thicknesses of cloth formingthe pads. The back piece, A, of the belt is also stiffened with whaleboncs, as shown. Buttoned to the bottom of this back belt-piece 40 there are two broad straps, C, which pass under and button in front to the lower corners of the abdominal pads B. These straps O are made quite broad at their rear ends, and then The object of my invent-ion is to provide an taper to narrow straps. Buttoned to these straps there may be a catamenial sack, D, or 5 ythe straps may support and hold in place a lnapkin during the menstrual periods. Ati'tached to the side corners of the abdominal l pads there are straps E, which pass round the hips and button to the short straps of elastic 5o 1 webbing, E, fastened or buttoned to the pieces C.
l The elastic straps a a and E E taken together give all the play necessary to adapt the supporter to the changes of the figure due to i change of position. It can be worn without l any inconvenience, but with comfort and relief, as a uniform and equal support is given to the abdomen.
Buttoned to the front and rear of the waist-- 6o belt there are tabs F and G, respectively, to which are buttoned the elastic shoulder-straps I-I. After child-birth the shoulder-straps may 3 be discarded and the supporter worn with comfort for several months or more, or as long: i as desired. l Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 5 Patent, isi The abdominal supporterherein described,
consisting of the waist-belt, the abdominal sector-shaped pads hung from the waist-belt by elastic straps, the straps C, buttoned to the bolt behind and to the bottom of the abdominal pads in front, the side straps connecting the abdominal pads with the pieces 0 at the back, and the front strap connecting the two abdominal pads together with the shoulderstraps, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I atiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HARRIET N. GRAY. Witnesses:
