I. C. KIGGINS. (IASB POR'BUOKS.
No. 439,782. Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC C. KIGGINS, OF ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY.
OASE FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION form-ing part of Letters Patent No. 439,782, dated Iilovembei` 4, 1890.
Application tiled May 26, 1890. Serial No. 353,124. (No modeL? To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, IsAAO C. KiGGINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cases for Books; and the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to cases for springback books-such as ledgers and other account-books and blank-bOoks-and particularly to the hubs upon the backs of such books. These cases have heretofore been made up by hand, there being at the back of the book a curved strip of binders board upon which cut-out pieces of leather or binders board are glued to make the single or double thickness hubs the leather covering the back being While wet drawn or stretched over the said hubs, and back of binders board and shaped to conform to the inequalities of the parts, and this hand-work is expensive.
My invention is a new article of manufacture; and it consists in a case for spring-back books wherein the hubs on the back are stamped up by pressure in a strip of binders board and the leather of the back, and these hubs may be single or double and of any desired width, length, and depth according to the size of the book, and these hollow hubs may be stamped up by a single operation or a succession of operations.
Cases of my improved form are made in standard sizes, and are an article of merchandise adapted to a case to receive the sewed signatures forming the leaves of the book.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of theinner face of the case as laid open, and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the case through one of the hubs.
The case is made with the two sides a a of binders board, which form the covers of the book. The leather b or other similar material forming the nished face of the case eX- tends over the surface of said sides a o. and across between them Where the back is to be formed, and the edges of the leather around three edges of the said sides a a are turned over and secured upon the inner face of said sides. A strip of binders board c is secured to the leather equidistant from the opposite edges of the sides a a', and while this strip c and the leather b are wet and pliable the same are stamped up in heated dies to impart the curved form of the back and simultaneously to press outward in the moist strip and leather the swelled portions or hubs upon the back. These hubs, according to the size of the case, may be single or double and of any desired length, widt-h, or depth, and the parts being stamped in heated dies dries out the moisture and sets the parts so that the proper shape is insured and maintained.
In Fig. 2 the sides aa are shown by dotted lines in their closed position.
My improved case is readily and quickly made in a thorough and accurate manner, and the expensive hand-labor heretofore employed in making books in the usual manner is rendered unnecessary.
I claim as my invention- Asa new article of manufacture, the curved back-case for spring-back books formed of covered binders board of nearly uniform thickness throughout and having hollow baokwardly-proj ectin g ribs or hubs, substantially as specified.
Signed by me this 16th day of May, A. D. 1890.
ISAAC C. KIGGINS.
