TONGUE-SUPPORT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,202, dated October 28, 1890.

Application led July 22, 1890. Serial No. 359,531. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN EDWARD SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brazilton, in the county of Orawfordand State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful. Tongue-Support, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in tongue-supports.

The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of tongue-supports and attach them to the body of a vehicle and prevent them interfering with the run of the same.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, hereinai ter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the tongue-support constructed in accordance with this invention attached to a vehicle and supporting the tongue of the same. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of t-he spring, the diverging rods being illustrated in elevation. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of the spring. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the clamp.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates the dash-board of a vehicle provided on its front face' with vertical strips 2, having perforations 3 near their upper end, in which is arranged a horizontal rod 4, extending across the front of the body of the vehicle and extending beyond the vertical strip 2, and providing means for attaching divergent rods 5, formed integral with each other and provided at their ends with hooks @adapted to engage the extended ends of the horizontal rod 4.. The divergent rods 5 are constructed of a single piece, which is bent midway its length to provide an eye 7 to receive a hook 8, that connects the divergent rods with a spring 9, and the ends of the divergent rods 5 are slightly curved or bent to clear the vertical strips 2. The spring 9 is spiral and has its ends secured to the ends of oppositely-disposed loop rods or staples 10, arranged within and forming loops at the end of the spring, one of which loops is attached to the hook 8 and the other is provided with a chain 11,

forming convenient means for connecting the spring to a clamp l2 of the tongue 13. The ends of the loop rodsor staples 10 are provided with eyes formed by bending the end around the outer coil of the spring, and when the loop rods or staples are pulled upon their. -ends are drawn toward each other, thereby compressing the spring, which forms a cushion.

The clamp 12 consists of two sections 14, having their upper ends secured together by a rivet 15, which also secures ahook 16 to the clamp to engage the chain 1], and the lower ends of the sections are perforated and adapted to receive a bolt or rivet 17, arranged beneath the tongue and securing the clamp thereto.

From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the tongue-support is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, and is adapted to be readily attached to the body of the vehicle and tongue, and will not interfere with the run of the vehicle.

Having described my invention, what I claim isl The combination, with a vehicle having its body provided with the vertical strips 2, and the horizontal rod passing through perforations of the strips and having its ends eX- tended beyond the latter, of the divergent rods constructed of a single piece doubled to form a loop 7, and having its ends slightly curved and provided with hooks engaging the extended ends of the horizontal rod,the spiral springs, and the oppositely-disposed loop rods or staples arranged within the spring and having their ends provided with eyes and secured to the outer coil of the spring, said loop rods or staples being extended beyond the ends of the spring to provide loops, the upper one being connected to the eye of the divergent rods by a hook and the lower one being provided with a chain .adapted to be attached to the tongue of the vehicle by a clamp, substantially as described.
