To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HUGH R. BYNUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckle Attachments or Clips for Harness, of Which the following is a specifi` cation.

This invention has for its object to provide a new and improved sheet metal buckle attachment or clip, which is simple and economical in construction, and possesses the requisite strength and durability for connecting straps to the breeching of harness,`tugs to haines, and for other purposes.

The invention has also for its object to provide a novel construction, whereby one end of a sheet metal buckle attachment or clip is so shaped as to enable it to be bent to conform to the circle of a breeching ring, and thus render it susceptible of being uniformly bent around and secured to the ring or segmental loop ofthe breeching, to present a iinished, neat and smooth appearance.

To accomplish these objects my invention consists in a buckle attachment or clip blank, comprising connected parallel side members provided with extensions arranged at obtuse angles to the longitudinal lines of the side members, for the purpose of conforming to the circle of a ring when said extensions are bent around the same.

The invention also consists in certain other features of construction hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a harness breech, showing my improved buckle attachment or clip connected with a breeching ring to connect the breeching strap therewith. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view of the improved buckle attachment or clip blank prior to being bent into acomplete shape for connecting a breeching or other strap to a breeching ring or other part of harness. Fig. 3 is a similar view, showing the blank bent into shape to produce the buckle attachment or clip frame, a buckle being secured toone end of the frame, and the opposite end thereof ready for attachment to a breeching ring or other part of harness.

In order to enable those skilledin the art to make and use my invention I will new describe the same in detail, referring first to Fig. 2 of the drawings, wherein it will be observed that'the improved blank is composed of parallel side arms or members l and 2, connected centrally between their ends through the medium of separated cross-bars 3 and 4, to provide a central, open space 5.

The parallel side arms or members l and 2 are so fashioned at one extremity as to provide the diverging end extensions 6 and 7, Fig. 2, which stand at obtuse angles to the longitudinal lines of the side arms or members, and the side arms or members are provided. in their edges, near the ends opposite the end extensions 6 and 7, with lateral elongated notches or recesses 8 and 9, which provide the necessary space to accommodate the tongue ofa buckle, as will hereinafter appear.

The blank above described is stamped in a single piece from sheet metal, and is furnished with suitable rivet-holes l0 for the passage of rivets, or similar fastening devices for securing the attachment or clip to a leather foundation and connecting the buckle and the breeching ring.

The blank is fashioned into the improved attachment 01 clip by bending the parallel side arms or members l and 2 around toward each other, so that they lie beneath the separated cross-bars 3 and 4, and their longitudinal edges 12 are in juxtaposition to each other. The buckle 13, for the breeching or other strap, is connected with the clip by bending the notched or recessed end portions 8 and 9 of the parallel arms or members l and 2 around the cross-bar 14 of the buckle, and then passing rivets, as at 15, through the parts directly in rear of the buckle cross-bar. The tongue of the buckle lies in the space created by the notches or recesses 8 and 9, which notches or recesses lie opposite each other when the parallel side arms or members l and 2 are bent under the separated cross-bars 3 and 4, as shown in Fig. 3. The separated cross-bars 3 and 4 are elevated above the plane of the parallel side arms or members l and 2 when the latter are bent under said cross-bars, so that the latter constitute a loop for the reception of the free end of a strap which is engaged with the buckle 13.

The buckle attachment or clip is connected ICO with the ring 16 of abreeching 17 by bending the diverging end extensions 6 and 7 around the ring and securing the parts by rivets 18. The diverging end extensions are provided for the special purpose of giving shape to the buckle attachment or clip, so that it will conform to the circle of the breeching ring and enable the attachment or clip to be applied by bending it around the ring, while it produces a finished, neat and smooth appearance.

In sheet-metal buckle attachments or clips, as heretofore constructed, it is difficult to attach one end thereof to a ring or to a half circle or segmental loop, in that the attaching end parts extend longitudinally in parallel lines from the body of the clip, and if bent around the ring or half circle or segmental loop they will not conform to the circle of the same, in consequence of which the device presents a rough, unfinished appearance at the point of attachment to the ring, half circle, or segmental loop.

In my improved construction the diverging end extensions and 7 give such shape to the attachment or clip frame as renders it susceptible of conforming to the circle of the breeching or other ring, so that the device can be practicably applied and present a nice appearance, which is advantageous and very desirable.

The improved attachment or clip herein described and shown is particularly designed for connecting breeching straps to the breeching rings of harness, but I do not wish to be understood as confining myself to any particular use of the improved device, as obviously it can be employed to connect tugs to hames, especially leather straps to iron gig hannes, and for any other purpose for which it is adapted to be used.

The improved blank is capable of being readily shaped into the form described to produce the attachment or clip ready for application to the ring and buckle by the employment of ordinary rivets.

The sheet-metal attachment or clip is preferably riveted to a leather backing or foundation 19, and when so employed it is desirable to use a leather filling 20 between the backing or foundation 19 and the body of the sheet-metal frame. The leather filling 2O can be a simple strip of leather extending along the underside of the body of the attachment or clip, and having its ends bent around the breeching or other ring and around the crossbar of the buckle, the whole being secured by the rivets which attach the sheet-metal frame to the backing or foundation and to the breeching-ring and buckle.

If the attachment or clip is not intended for attachment to a ring or half circle or segmental loop, the end portions 6 and 7 may run parallel with the side arms or membersl and 2, but this is not a suitable construction, Where the device is to be applied to a breeching ring, or any other ring part of harness.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim ,is-

l. A buckle-attachment or clip-blank, comprising connected parallel side members having at one end means for attaching a buckle, and provided at the opposite end with the extensions 6 and 7 arranged at obtuse angles to the longitudinal lines of the side members, for the purpose of conforming to the circle of a ring when said extensions are bent around the same, substantially as and for the purposesV described.

2. A sheet-metal buckle attachment or clipframe, comprising connected parallel side members having edge notches near one end, and provided at the opposite end with the eX- tensions 6 and 7 arranged at obtuse angles to the longitudinal lines ofthe side members, for conforming to the circle of a ring when said extensions are bent around the same, substantially as and for the purposes described.

3. A sheet-metal buckle-attachment or clipframe, composed of parallel side members connected by separated cross-bars, having edge notches near one end, and provided at the opposite ends with the extensions 6 and 7 arranged at obtuse angles to the longitudinal lines of the side members, said parallel side members being bent toward each other beneath the connected cross-bars, substantially as and for the purposes described.
