BOX LOOP EUR RAME TUGS.
Patented May 81883;

nl NPA UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WELLS A. UNDERWOOD, OF WOOSTER, OHIO.
BOX-LOOP FOR HAM E-TUGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 277,434, dated May 8, 1883.
Application tiled January 18, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLS A. UNDERWooD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wooster, in the county of Wayne, in the State of Ohio7 have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in BoXLoops for Hame-Tugs oi' which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to those hametngs in which the box -loop is adapted to be slid in between the two arms ot the clip, and removable therefrom by the removal of a single attaching-rivet; but the loop is also adapted for use in any customary form of tug, and is so constructed as to be capable of sewing or otherwise attaching to its position.
My improved loop is made of metal in box form, the sides being solid and connected above and below by metallic bars formed integrally therewith. A loop thus made is stronger and more durable than a leather loop. Easyaccess is allowed through the top cross-bars to the strap, and easy attachment to the tug, if necessary, by the looping of the thread over the bottom cross-bars.
In the drawings, Figure l represents in section the metallic loop applied to a name-tug, such as shown in Patent No. 260,905, of T. A. Simmons. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the 3o loop.
improved box-loop is made with Vsolid metal sides a, connected by metallic cross-bars b at bottom and c at top. The sides a are out away between the bars c c, thus allowing ready access to the strap andeasy manipulation there of.' It will be seen that the loop, although adapted to be employed, as illustrated in Fig. 1,1n a tug in which the loop is inserted by slipping it between the arms of the clip and then all parts fixed together by a single rivet, is also adapted for use in those tugs in which the loop is attached by means of sewing. In such tugs the thread connecting the loop will be passedover the bars b, by which means the loop will be held securely in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The metallic box-loop for hame-tugs, consisti fing of sides a a, being cut away, for the pur pose described, and united at the top by cross' bars c c c and at the bottom by cross-bars b b b b, as and for the purposes set forth.
WELLS A. UNDERWOOD.
