WIT EEEEE UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
BENJAMIN A. SMITH, OF CAMDEN, NEWV JERSEY.
SHOE-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO. 437,255, dated September 30, 1890.
Application filed March 13, 1890. Serial No. 344,336. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at amden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Shoe-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The upper of the shoe is provided with a circular plate which bears on the top of the leatheig and has a number of knockdown tips for fixing it in place. A button of this plate engages with a cap that extends through the flap of the upper, and has a suitable fingerhold or knob on its screw-stub.
On reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 is a section through the fastener, and the material of the shoe-upper and its flap. The cap is sectioned in heavy black lines, and its finger-hold is not sectioned, the whole being greatly enlarged for the purpose of illustration. Fig. 2 is a side view of the flange and cap as applied to the upper flap. Fig. 3 is a side View of the finger-hold or knob of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a view of the bottom flange and its knockdown projections; and Fig. 5 is a side View of a shoe and the fasteners disconnected or unbuttoned.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
A is the upper of a shoe, and B its flap.
O is a circular or other shaped plate that is applied to the upperbeneath the flap, and a its knockdown projections for extending through the leather and knocking down and clinching, as shown at b, Fig. 1.
D is a flange at the under side of the flap 13, provided with a cap 0, that extends through a similar opening in the leather. A fingerhold or knob E screws on a stud d of the cap, and confines the flap between it and the flange D.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The knob E is used for overdrawing the flap until its cap 0 is above the button F of the plate 0, when it is pressed over it, as shown, Fig. 1. The cap cannot accidentally get released from the button, for the tension or drawing of the upper and flap being lateral the resistance is such that no vertical movement is possible.
I claim as my invention- The plate 0, provided with projections a and button F, in combination with flanged cap 0, provided with a screw-stud d, projecting from its upper portion, and a finger-hold E, attached to said stud, substantially as de scribed.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
BENJAMIN A. SMITH.
