ORDER-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 436,396, dated September 16, 1890.

Application filed April 25, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOHN F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Order-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates tothe construction of clamping-springs and the method of securing them in place upon order-holders.

As described in a former application filed by me, I employ in the present case two or more short clamping-springs, two inches orso in length, instead ot' the long single spring employed previous to my said former invention. These springs,inasmuch as there is no canvas or other connection between the two halves of the holder, must be secured to the narrow boards of the holder with considerable firmness, because if they slip olf or become loose there is nothing to hold the two halves of the holder together. The means of securing the springs upon the holder which I employ consists of indentatons in the springsl whereby proj ections or points upon the inner surface of the springs are formed and caused to engage with corresponding recesses in the narrow boards ofthe holder. These recesses I find, however, are liableto tear ont, and hence I provide the narrow boards, at the points where these recesses are made, with metallic strips with which the projections formed by the indentations will engage. the wide and narrow boards, as shown at d. The narrow boards are formed of two layers of pasteboardB b. The outer board B of the narrow part is provided with slots E, having lateral enlargements e. In the body of these slots I insert a narrow metal strip F, which substantially lls the slot and is covered and held in place by the canvas cover.

G Cr are the clamping-springs, of which I use preferably three upon wide holders and two upon narrow ones. These springs are indented upon each side, as shown at g, thereby forming upon their inner surfaces projecting points 71 and these indentations are located so that the points h will enter lateral enlargements c of the slots in the pasteboard with the protruding points of the springs engaging with the bars F. It will be seen from this construction that any effort to draw off the springs or to pull the boards out from their embrace will be resisted by the engagement of the metal parts h and F. I thus avoid the danger, which would exist if the projecting points h were not engaged by a metal stay, of their forcingtheir way through the soft material of the holder and thus becoming detached.

I claiml. The combination, in an order-holder, of springs having inward projections, in combination with the boards embraced by such springs, the latter being provided with metal bars engaging said projections upon the springs, substantially as set forth.

2. In an order-holder, the combination of the clamping-springs having inward projections, with the narrow boards made in two parts, with the outer part slotted, and metallic bars or stays inserted in said slots, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the clamping-springs having the inward projections h with the narrow boards B b, the outer portions of said boards being slotted, as at E e, and the metallic bars inserted in the body of the slots, substantially as set forth.
