CAN DLESTICK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,118, dated September 9, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMAN BLUME, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Candlesticks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, effective device whereby candles of various sizes may be securely confined and readily adjusted in a candlestick having a socket whose dimensions are fixed; and it consists in the combination, with the socket of the candlestick, of a gravitating block fitted in a suitable seat formed to receive it in the upper end thereof, and which shall operate automatically by its weight to bear inwardly against the periphery of the candle and thereby clamp and secure it, all as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved candle stick, and Fig. 2 a top view of the cup and socket with the inserted candle in cross-section.

The candlestick A may be of any desired form and design, provided, as is customary, with a vertical socket B to receive and hold the candle. An offset 0 is formed in the rim of this socket to flare outwardly therefrom, so as to provide a lateral V-shaped notch or recess e in the periphery of the rim, which shall incline outwardly and upwardly, as shown in Fig. 1. This recess is adapted to receive a block D, having, preferably, the form of a right-angled triangle,with the angle of its hypotenuse corresponding substantially with that of the divergent side of the recess, and which is made of a length somewhat greater than that of said recess. The lateral walls of the recess 6 may be made straight and parallel, but preferably are made to diverge, so as to impart to the recess a dovetail form in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 2, and the gravitating wedge D is in such case made of a corresponding cross-section, so that although made so much smaller than the recess as to fit loosely therein it may not drop down entirely out of it into the socket B.

In use the gravitating block D, sliding automatically down into the recess 6, will have its inner straight face carried inward by reason of the inclination of the outer wall of the recess, while the parallelism of said inner face with the opposite straight side of the socket B will be preserved by reason of the coincidence in the angle of inclination of the inclined faces of the block and recess. Hence the inner face of the block will be brought to bear evenly and with uniform pressure against a candle F, inserted between it and the opposite wall of the socket, so as to hold it firmly without marring or defacing it. The distance to which the block will drop in its seat to strike the candle will'be in proportion to the diameter of the latter. If the candle be large, the block will have but slightmovement. If it be small, as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 1,the block will slip down until it comes into contact therewith, the opening for the candle between the block and the opposite side of the socket being rapidly reduced as the block is lowered. The adjustment of the block D is facilitated by means of a projecting handle H.

The offset 0, in which the inclined recess 6 is formed, may be measurably concealed so as not to impair the symmetry of design in the candlestick, by causing its outer end to regis ter with the rim of the cup or collar G, formed, as is usual, to encircle the rim of the socket.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of a gravitating clamping-block with the rim of a candlestick recessed to receive it, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.

2. The candlestick having a lateral outwardly-flaring recess in its rim, in combination with a wedge-shaped block fitted loosely in said recess, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
