Description

I. P. STOCKTON, J'r.
PICTURE-NAILS.
No. 169,739, Patented Nov. 9, 11875.
5 JOHN P. STOCKTON, JB., OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PICTURE-NAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 169,739, dated November 9, 1875; application filed August 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN P. S'rocK'roN, Jr., of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Picture or Cord Nail, of which the following is a specification:
The figure is a side view of my improved nail, partly in section, to show the construction.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved nail or spike for use in hanging pictures and other objects, for supporting clotheslines, and for other similar purposes, which shall be so constructed as to firmly support the object suspended, and allow the suspending wire, cord, or rope to be easily adjusted without its being necessary to raise said suspended object.
The invention consists in an improved picture or cord nail formed by the combination of the nail or spike, the stationary disk or flange, and the knob made in two parts, the inner part or neck being loose, and the outer part stationary, witheach other, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the body of the nail or spike, which may be made of any suitable size, and which is made pointed at one end, and-has a screw-thread out upon its other end. To the nail or spike A, near its outer or screw-thread end, is rigidly attached a circular disk or flange, B, which is designed to rest against the wall or other support 'into which the nail or spike A may be driven so as to firmly support said nail, even when the said nail or spike may not be firmly bedded in said support. 0 D is the knob, which is made in two parts, the inner part or neck 0 ofthe knob -being loose, so that it may turn freely between the flange B and the outer part D. The
outer part D of the knob G D has a screwthread cut in its inner surface to fit upon the screw-thread out upon the outer end of the nail or spike A. The knob G D may be made of any suitable material.
With this construction the suspending wire, cord, or rope may be readily adjusted without its being necessary to raise the suspended object to enable said wire, cord, or rope to be moved in its seat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent An improved picture or cord nail formed by the combination of the nail or spike A, the
stationary disk or flange B, and the knob O D, made in two parts, the inner part or neck 0 being loose, and the outer part D stationary, with each other, substantially as herein shown and described.
