Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES H. SCOFIELD, OF U'lICA, NEV YORK.
CUTTING OR TRIMMING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 434,956, dated August 26, 1890.
Application filed April 22, 1889.
,To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, CHARLES H. SooFInLD, of the city of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting or Trimming Devices; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention7 which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in devices for cutting or improving photographprints and similar purposes. l
In the drawings which accompany and form apart of this specification, and in which similar letters and igures of reference refer to like parts in the several figures, Figure l shows a side view of the device. Fig. 2 shows a top view. Fig. 3 shows a bottom view of the jaw. Fig. e shows a section on line A B of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, l indicates the base on which is mounted a hard-steel dieplate 2. A movable jaw 3 is provided, hinged to the base at 4, and in the case of the shape shown at one corner of a square or parallelogram. To the diagonally-opposite corner is pivoted at 8 a connecting-bar 5, which bar is pivoted at one end at 9 to base l, and is provided with a handle l0 for operating the same.
shearing-knives 4.a, 4b, It, and 4d are mounted upon adjustable pieces a, h, c, and d, respectively, which adjustable pieces a-re scoured upon jaw tby screws Il passing through slotted openings in the pieces and engaging in screw-threaded openings in the jaw. It will be observed that each knife has one end abutting against an adjacent knife and the other end overlapping the end of an adjacent knife, which construction allows the knives to be adjusted relative to each other and the die-plate and still cut entering into the corner.
In using my device the Ajaw is opened from the base and die-plate by raising handle lO into the position shown in Fig. 1. The prin ts or material to be cutare then introduced between the jaw and plate 2, lying on plate 2. The handle is now brought down to a hori- Serial No. 308,141. (No model.)
zontal position orbelow, and the knives shearing the edges of plate 2, beginning at the corner next to the hinge, trim or cut the prints truly and evenly. The handle may be raised into the position shown in Fig. l and the prints removed, or they may be removed through the opening in the jaw.
It will be observed that the knife shown at 4b in Fig. 4. is wider or deeper than knife 4d. This is provided on account of the shape of the cutter shown being a parallelogram hinged at one corner, and is constructed thus, so that knife 4l and et will be cutting or shearing at the same time on opposite sides of the print.
The device is shown and described with a cutter in the shape of a parallelogram; but I do not mean to limit myself thereby, as the device may be constructed in numerous other forms, and other alterations and modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-d l. The combination, in a cutting or trimming device, of a base having a plain dieplate mounted thereon, and a jaw having knives surrounding an opening through the jaw and adapted to shear by all the edges ofthe dieplate, the jaw being hinged to the base.
' 2. In a cutting or trimming device, the combination of a base, a die-plate mounted upon thebase, and a jaw carrying knives inclosing a space in substantially square, quadrilateral,
or angular form, and adapted to shear by all the edges of the die-plate and arranged with one end of each knife abutting against and the other end overlapping the endof the other adjacent knife, the jaw being hinged to the base opposite or adjacent to one of the angles formed by the knives, substantially as set forth.
3. In a cutting or trimming device, the combination of a base, a die-plate of substantially square, quadrilateral, or angular form, a jaw hinged to the base diagonally opposite one of the corners of the die-plate, and knives arranged upon the jaw and adapted to shear by all the edges of the die-plate.
4. In a cutting or trimming device, the com` bination of a base, adieplate of substantially square, quadrilateral, or form having an angular corner, a jaw hinged to the base diago- IOC nally opposite one of the corners of the dieplate, knives arranged upon the jaw and adapted to shear by all the edges of the dieplate, the lever pivoted to the base, and the connecting-rod connecting the lever with the corner of the jaw diagonally opposite the hinge, substantially as set forth.
5. In a cutting or trim ming device, the oombination of ya base, a die-plate in substantially square or rectangular form mounted thereon, and a jaw carrying knives adapted to shear by the edge of the die-plate hinged to the base opposite one of the corners of the die-plate and having an opening through the jaw dii'eotly over the die-plate, substantially as set forth.
6. Theeombination, in a cutting or trimming device, of the die-plate mounted upon a base, the jaw hinged to the base opposite to one of the corners of the die-plate, and the knives mounted upon the jaw and adapted to shear by all the edges of the die-plate, beginning at a corner and Cutting simultaneously in opposite directions around the dieplate and ending at the corner diagonally opposite the place of beginning.
In Witness whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. SCOFIELD. Vitnesses.
JosIAH PERRY, M. E. ROBINSON.
