By this arrangement it Awill be obvious that when the occasionk requiresthe brackets may be readily and conveniently positioned or'removed as the requirements of practice may dictate. Although not essential I find it'preferable to surround the outermost clamping bolt 32 with a sleeve 33 interposed between the sections 1-1 and serving as an additional means to maintain the sections in their proper spaced relation. The upper portions of the brackets 31 are provided with alined apertures with which is adapted toregister a corresponding aperture suitably produced in the lever 30 and at the aXialcenter of the segmental rack tering or alined openings is adapted to be projected a shaft 34 and on such shaft the lever 30 is adapted tov be rocked or oscillated. In threaded engagement with such shafts 15 and interposed between the wings 17 and the adjacent flanges 4 are the nuts 8 which are adapted to bear against such flanges 4 and thus serve as a means for locking the tables or platforms 6 in their adjusted positions. p
The inner or opposite facel of the section 1 below and to the outer side of the opposite ends of the opening 2 is thickened or enlarged laterally, as indicated at 18, such enlarged or thickened portions 18 of the re-V spective sections 1-1 being adapted toV overlap each other when the sections are assembled in operative position and such thickened portions are provided f with suitable registering apertures through which the clamping or retaining means 19 is adapted to pass, such clamping or retaining means being herein shown as a plurality of bolts and co-acting nuts or burs. While I do not wish to be limited to thisvparticular clamping or retaining means, I find it of especial advantage as it affords a ready and convenient means whereby the sectionsmay be assembled or disassembled as the occasion may require. The upper longitudinal marginal portion of each of these enlarged or thickened portions 18 is reduced, as at 20, in order to afford a suitable channel when the parts are assembled to receive the work- `ing margin of the cutting blade 21, employed in connectionwith my improved device. The sections 1-1 are further maintained in their assembled position, as herein disclosed, through the medium of a plurality of clamping bolts 22 extended through the upper marginal portions of such sections at predetermined points and in order that the action of such clamping members upon the sections may be limited in order to prevent any binding of the parts whereby obstruction or hindrance may be offered to its operation, l interpose between such sec- 29 and through these regisf the shaft 34 is in the.'
In the practical employment of my cutting machine I have found that it can be used with equal convenience in connection with varying materials and I have used it with success in connection with slate, asbestos, leather, paper, wood, sheet metal or the like, and without any changes in its construction or arrangement other than in the character of the cutting implement employed. When I emplo my improved device in connection with s ate and similar material, I find it best to employ a blade wherein the cutting edge is flat as disclosed in the general embodiment of my invention as illustrated in the drawings. When it is desired to employ my device in connection with paper, Wood or the like, the cuttin bladey 2l is removed and in lieu thereof, employ a cutting blade 21a shown in fragment in detail Fig. 8, wherein the workin@r edge thereof is beveled to afford a knif edge. When I desire to employ my device for the severance of sheet metal or the like, I substitute the blade 21b shown in fragment in Fig. 9 of the drawings and wherein the workin edge of the blade is grooved or channe ed, as indicated at c. While any means may be employed for inter-changing the blades, I find it best that each of the blades be provided with a similar head so that it is only necessary to substitute one of the cutting implements for the other.
It is thought to be obvious that the movement imparted to the head 24 when the lever 30 is rocked will result in the creation of a draw'or shear cut which, for the purposes for which my present invention is desired, has been found to afford the best results.
Inorder to assure the best results in the severing operation, I have found it of advantage that the work or material to be severed should be effectually held or clamped to the plate 6 to prevent any creeping or displacement thereof at the time the same is being acted upon by the blade 21 and, as herein disclosed, I accomplish this purpose by providing each of the sections with the clamping bar 36 extending longitudinally of the opening 2 and having its lower marginal portion provided with the inwardly directed flange 37 in order to afford an increased bearing surface. The ends of this flange 37 are projected beyond the ends of the bar 36 and are adapted to contact with the inner face of the coacting section whereby it will be eflectually held against outward movement relatively to the cutting blade 21. At substantially its center the bar is provided with; the outwardly directed perforate ear 38 serving as a mountingfor the upwardly directed shaft 39 which is also projected through a suitable opening 40 produced in the upper flange 3 and in alinement with the opening in the ear 38 and through a suitable opening produced in the laterally directed bracket 4l resting upon the upper edge of the section l. This bracket 41 is of such length as to bridge the space between the sections l-l when assembled and projects beyond each of such sections and is common to the shaft 39 of each of such sections. For the convenience of assemblage and to assure its maintenance in proper position the bracket 41 is positioned within a recess 42 produced in the upper marginal portion of each of the sections 1 and is secured thereto by suitable anchoring members herein shown as screws 43, passed therethrough and in engagement with the adjacent portion of the sections.
By the arrangement, hereinbefore set forth, it will be obvious that the bar 36 is capable-of free vertical movement to assure the insertion therebetween of material of various thicknessl and in order to maintain a clamping engagement with the upper surface of such material, I provide on the shaft 39 the-laterally projecting skew teeth 44 adapted to mesh with suitable skew threads 45 produced on the adjacent face of the section l above the flange 3 and disposed at such an inclination as t-o create the requisite clamping action to the bar and to maintain it in such engagement upon the proper axial movement being imparted to the shaft 39. While any means may be employed for imparting this requisite axial movement to the shaft 39, I prefer to employ thc outwardly directed lever 46 suitably secured thereto and affording a hand grasp whereby the shaft 39 may be readily and conveniently rotated. As herein disclosed, this lever 46 is directed through the shaft 39 and the skew teeth 44, hereinbefore referred to, are formed-on the inner end of such lever. Shouldlthe occasion require the employment of a punch, I provide for this contingency by providing the lever 3() at a predetermined point intermediate its length with a die or finger 47 adapted to pass through an opening, 48 produced in the bracket 41 and operating in a manner which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art towhich my present invention appert-ains.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cutting machine constructed in accordance with my i11- vention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and by reason of the ef* fectiveness with which the cutting operation may be performed and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the spirit and prin* ciples thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to out my invention in practice.
I claim:
i. A device of the Character described in cluding a `supporting frame, a cutting implement, ears plement carried by the frame and directed through such slots,
ported lever member provided with a'rack adapted to mesh with the rack on such ear.V
2. A cluding a frame comprising a plurality of sections having the major'portion of their adjacent faces separated andrbeing provided with alined openings, a table supported byl each of the sections adjacent'the lower wall of the opening therein, said table being provided intermediate its length with transversely disposed channels in its upper surface and having openings therethrough intersecting such channels,z a plate supported by the table and provided with racks on its under surface adapted to extend within the; channels of the table,` Va suitably supportedj pinion projecting through each of the openings of the table and adapted to mesh with the adjacent rack ofthe plate, and means` projecting upwardly from, such implement and being provided with inclined slots, supporting means for the im-l one of'such ears beingl provided with a rack, and a pivotallysupdevice of the character described in'-v through the flange and capableof endwise movement, and means. carried by the shaft coacting with the frame for maintaining the shaft ragainst endwise movement.
4. A device of the character, described comprising a frame ,having an opening therein, a table positioned adjacent the lower wall of the opening, cutting means adaptedv to intersect the opening of the frame, -a flange projecting outwardlyfrom the frame adjacent the upper wall of the opening therein, a clamping bar extended across the opening above the table, a shaft swiveled to the bar and projected upwardly through `the flange yand capable of endv'vise movement, and means carried by the Vshaft coacting with the frame for maintaining the shaft against endwise movement upon axial adjustment of the shaft.
5. A device of the character comprising therein, a table positioned adjacent the lower wall vof the opening, cutting means adapted to intersect the opening of the described frame. a flange projecting outwardly from the frameadjacent the 4upper wall of the opening therein, a clamping .bar extended across the opening above the table, a shaft swiveled to the bar and projected upwardly through the flange and capable of endwise movement, said frame being provided with skew threads, said shaft being provided with corresponding skew threads adapted toA mesh with the threads ofthe frame upon an axial adjustment of the shaft.
