Mme 11S IINIT l1 ORMEL G. SEALOCK, OF SCIPIO, INDIANA.
POTATO-PARER.
Application filed April 5, 1910.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, ORMEL Gr. SEALOOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scipio, in the county of Jennings, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Potato-Parers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Qhis invention relates to culinary utensils and has special reference to a device for paring and slicing fruit and vegetables.
One object of the invention is to improve and simplify devices of this'character.
A second object of the invention is to provide an improved form of guard for a double edged paring blade.
With the above and other objects in view,
the invention consists in general of certain' novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, -like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a knife equipped with the improved guard. Fig. ,2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the guard removed from the knife.
The knife itself is provided with the usual handle 10 to which is attached a double edged paring blade 11. The guard for this blade comprises a rectangular metallic plate having a rectangular opening 11 formed therein so that a frame is left consisting of end members 12 and 13 and side members 1 1. The end member 12 is transversely curved as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Each of the side members 14 is first curved as at 15 toward the direction of the curve of the member 12 and then bent quite abruptly in the opposite direction to form portions 16 substantially at right angles to the bight portions of said members 14:. The end member 13 is then bent outwardly to lie parallel to the body portions of the members 1 1 and offset therefrom. In cutting out the opening 11 the side edges are slit into the portion 13 so that when this portion is bent as previously described there is provided an inwardly directed tongue 17. The knife blade 11 and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 17, 1911.
Serial No. 553,589.
the members 14: are provided with registering rivet holes through which pass the rivets 18 which serve to secure the guard in position on the blade. hen the guard is thus secured it will be noted that the portions 15 spring slightly away from the blade and that one edge of the blade lies adjacent the portions 16 so that the tongue 17 overlaps this edge while the member 13 extends outwardly therefrom. It will also be noted that the member 12 lies in slightly spaced relation to the other edge of the blade.
For the purpose of rendering the opera tion of the invention clear the edge of the blade under the tongue 17 has been indicated by the numeral 19 while the edge adjacent the member 12 is indicated at 20. When using the device for paring the edge 20 is employed and by reason of the proximity of the member 12 to this edge only a thin paring can. be removed. When it is wished to use the device for slicing the edge 19 is employed. In this case the relatively wide space between the member 13 and edge 19 permits the vegetable or fruit to be sliced in suitable slices of uniform thickness. For the purpose of removing eyes from potatoes the knife is provided with the usual point 21.
There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. In a paring and slicing knife, a guard comprising a rectangular metallic plate having a rectangular opening therethrough whereby is formed a rectangular guard frame comprising end and side members, one of said end members being transversely curved, the side members being bent first in the direction of the curve of the end member and then in the opposite direction to provide portions at right angles to the bodies of the side members, the remaining end member being bent from the side members outwardly to lie substantially parallel to the bodies of said side members, said remaining end member being provided with an inwardly extending tongue.
2. In a paring and slicing knife, a guard comprising a rectangular metallic plate having a rectangular opening therethrough whereby is formed a rectangular guard frame comprising end and side members, one of said end members being transversely curved, the side members being bent first in the direction of the curve of the end member and then in the opposite direction to provide portions at right angles to the bodies of the side members, the remaining end member being bent from the side members outwardly to lie substantially parallel to the bodies of said side members, said remaining end member being provided with an inwardly extending tongue; in combination with a double edged knife blade having one edge lying against the right angular portions of the side members, said edge lying beneath said tongue, the other edge being adjacent to the inner edge of the curved end member, and means to secure 15 said guard to said blade.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
