NITED STATES PA UL SOHXVARZENHOEL-ZER, OF BUFFALO, NE? YORK.
PARlNG AND SLlClNG DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323A51, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed April 6, 1885.
To all whom, it inlay concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL Sonwnnznn HOELZER, a subjectof the Emperor of Germany, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State ol'New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paring and Slicing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a small portable device for paring and slicing potatoes, radishes, or other si rnilar articles of food; and it consists of a slicingknife provided with a screw for drawing it into the material to be sliced, a suitable handle, and a paring-knife mounted on aspring, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter shown,
- described, and claimed by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top view, looking toward the back of the knife; and Fig. 3 is an end view, looking toward the end of the knife and cutter.
In said drawings, a represents the slicingknife. It is provided with a ring or handle, a, and a is the cutting-edge. To one side of the knife, near the ring or handle, are two projecting pieces, a a, between which the bent end of the spring a is jointed byapin or rivet, a, so that the spring is capable of a slight movement sidewise back and forth. To the opposite end of the spring is a small paring-knife or cutter c. it is represented as rigidly secured to the spring, but may be made separate and secured in any well-known way (No model.)
by a screw.. At the end of the slicing-knife is rigidly secured a pointed screw,
The operationof the invention will be easily understood by reference to the drawings. A potato, radish, or other vegetable is put onto the screw 0-, as shown by the dotted lines 0 the spring and paringknif'e being moved so as to rest against the outside of the same, as shown by the dotted lines o in Fig. 1. If the slicing-knife is now turned, by placing the tinger in the ring a, it will cut a spiral slice through the vegetable as fast as the screw draws it down. (The slicing-knife is also in clined slightly, as shown in Fig. 3, so as to assist the screw.) At the same time the paring-knife cuts a narrow strip, or peels as fast as the slicingknife cuts it away.
1 am aware that a knife having a ring atone end, by which it is operated, and a screw at the opposite end is not new. I therefore do not claim such, broadly; but
W'hat I do claim is- A paring and slicing device consisting of a slicing-knife provided with a handle at one end and a pointed screw at the opposite end, in combination with a. spring, a", secured to the knife, and provided with a paring-knife, c, substantially as and for the purposes described.
PAUL SOHWARZENHOELZER.
