UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SILVIO E. MASSARI, OF' COLUMBUS, OHIO.
VEGETABLE-SLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 279,782, dated June 19, 1883.
- Application filed February 23, 1883. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SILvIo E. MASSARI, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in VegetableSlicers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in asimple and durable hand vegetable-slicer, in which a slicingknife has .combined with it, at or near one end, a screw that enters the vegetable to be sliced, and causes the knife, as it is revolved, to follow up the cut in a spiral and continuous manner, said knife also having attached to it, at or near its opposite end, ahandle in the form of a loop or ring, through which the finger of the operator is projected to twirl or rotate the knife, and that may also serve as a means for suspending the knife when not in use.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved vegetable-slicer as seen from the cutting-edge of the knife. Fig. 2 is a back View 'of the same at right angles to Fig. 1, and Fig.
3 is a transverse. section on the line 00 x in Fig. 2.
A in the drawings indicates the knife, which may be a flat and straight blade of steel sharpened on its cutting-edge a from its back or outer face, and which has attached to it, at one end, a screw, B, arranged to project from the face of the knife and at right angles thereto, while its opposite end is constructed to form or has attached to it a handle, which is in the form of a loop or ring, 0.
The slicer thus constructed may be used for slicing vegetables of different kinds; but it will be sufficient here to describe it as applied to slicing potatoes. Supposing the slicer to be used by a right-handed person, the potato is held by the left hand, with its ends facing right and left. The screwB is then in serted and started to screw into the right-hand end or portion of the vegetable, and its rotation in the same or entering direction continued by the operator placing a finger of the right hand into the ring 0 and twirling or rotating the knife A as rapidly as possible away from his or her person, while the opposite end of the vegetable is held by the left hand. This will produce a quick and uniform reduction of the vegetable into a continuous or spiral slice, which will in many cases be a desirable and neat form for dishing it up in, but which may, if preferred, be subdivided by cross-cutting it into a series of slices.
By the use of this slicer, which is as simple as it is durable, and may be'operated by a child, a great saving of time will be effected and uniformity in the slicing secured, The loop or ring 0 not only gives a sure hold for rapidly twirling the knife by the finger, but is used for suspending the knife on'a nail, screw, or hook when the sliceris not in use.
I am aware that a disk having an opening, a cutting-blade projecting over the same, a screw secured to its center, and a crank-handle revolving the disk has been arranged in a grooved rim provided with a handle for holding the same, and a stationary knife to prevent the vegetable from turning and severing 'the slices is old, and I- therefore lay no claim to such invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a vegetableslicer composed of a knife, A, havinga ring, 0, at one endin the plane of the knife, and a screw, B, at its opposite end at right angles to said knife, the ring 0 serving the double purpose of revolving the knife and a means for suspending it when not in use, as set forth.
SlLVIO E. MASSARI.
